The use of smartphones in the school environment among adolescents in the Czech Republic: A comparative study

Abstract:

Cílem této studie je identifikovat a změřit vybrané dopady rozdílů v míře užívání smartphonů při pobytu ve škole mezi skupinami žáků 8. a 9. tříd na školách s různou mírou restrikce v užívání smartphonů. Byl zvolen kvantitativní výzkumný design, v němž jsme využili šest dotazníkových metod, které jsme doplnili o položky vlastní tvorby. Konkrétními vybranými metodami jsou dvě škály pro měření phubbingu (GSP) a (GSBP), z nichž první se věnuje tomu, jak často ignoruje respondent ostatní lidi pomocí svého smartphonu a druhá se věnuje tomu, jak často se cítí být ignorovaný samotný respondent svým okolím z téhož důvodu. Další metodou je škála měřící strach z promeškání (FoMO), škála měřící rozptýlení pozornosti smartphonem (SDS), škála pro měření závislosti na sociálních sítích (BSMAS) a škála pro měření osamělosti (UCLA LS). Dotazník vlastní konstrukce obsahoval položky, které se týkaly užívání smartphonu v průběhu všedního dne a ve školním prostředí a hodnocení školních výsledků a třídního kolektivu. Data byla sbírána online dotazníkem zprostředkovaným řediteli základních škol, který vyplnilo celkem 4284 žáků, z čehož bylo použitých 3781 vyplnění (1900 dívek a 1881 chlapců), ve věkovém rozpětí 13-16 let. Statistická analýza dat nepotvrdila signifikantní rozdíly v dopadech restrikce užívání smartphonů během výuky na sledované proměnné. Existují však rozdíly v souvislostech mezi mírou restrikce v době přestávek a vybranými proměnnými. Efekt pohlaví byl u daných proměnných signifikantní, ale poměrně slabý. Výsledky této práce umožňují náhled do problému, kterému dosud nebylo v rámci školního prostředí věnováno příliš pozornosti.

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to identify and measure selected impacts of differences in smartphone use while at school between groups of 8th and 9th grade students in schools with different levels of smartphone use restrictions. A quantitative research design was chosen, in which we used six survey methods supplemented with items of our own design. The specific methods chosen are two scales to measure phubbing, (GSP) and (GSBP), the former looking at how often the respondent ignores other people using their smartphone and the latter looking at how often the respondent themselves feel ignored by their environment for the same reason. Other methods include a scale measuring fear of missing out (FoMO), a scale measuring smartphone distraction (SDS), a scale measuring social media addiction (BSMAS), and a scale measuring loneliness (UCLA LS). The self-constructed questionnaire included items that addressed smartphone use during the daily routine and in the school environment, and ratings of school performance and classroom collective. Data were collected by an online questionnaire facilitated by primary school principals, which was completed by a total of 4284 students, of which 3781 completed the questionnaire (1900 girls and 1881 boys), with an age range of 13-16 years. Statistical analysis of the data did not confirm significant differences in the effects of restricting smartphone use during school hours on the variables of interest. However, there are differences in the associations between the level of restriction during breaks and the selected variables. The effect of gender was significant but relatively weak for the variables. The results of this work provide insight into a problem that has not received much attention within the school setting.
