Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a Supportive Tool in English Language Teaching (ELT) - a case study

Abstract:

The diploma thesis inquiries into the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. This thesis aims to describe the current state of AI use in English language teaching and to conduct research in a school environment based on activities designed to incorporate the use of AI tools. By testing the activities in practice and through observation, the reactions of students and the teacher will be investigated. This will measure the emotional value that such teaching can bring. The theoretical section will introduce basic terms and their relationship with fundamental concepts, based on professional literature and current research. Furthermore, it will describe the current typology of artificial intelligence and AI-based tools. Findings from these chapters will serve as a framework for critical evaluation of the currently available AI-driven tools and selecting appropriate AI tools for English language teaching. The theoretical part of the thesis is followed by the practical part, which focuses on a case study of selected elementary school classes. In the research section, a quantitative study utilising questionnaires will be conducted among the pupils and the opinions and experiences of Czech pupils with AI tools will be examined. The paper also analyses the behaviour and attitudes of the teacher and the pupils, who were introduced to artificial intelligence as a supportive tool during the experiment. The practical part of the thesis describes how pupils evaluate the work with artificial intelligence. The research is carried out by classroom observation method and by consolidating the feedback from the pupils, which is done through questionnaires. The results of the research will be used to answer the formulated research questions utilising appropriate statistical methods and taking into account observations from the lessons. The conclusion of the paper summarizes the common tendencies and differences between the lessons, and the effectiveness of the applied methods.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá využitím umělé inteligence (AI) ve vzdělávání. Cílem práce je popsat současný stav využití AI ve výuce anglického jazyka a na základě aktivit, vytvořených tak, aby zahrnovaly použití AI nástrojů, provést výzkum ve školním prostředí. Otestováním aktivit v praxi a pozorováním budou zkoumány reakce žáků a učitele. Tím bude změřena emoční hodnota, kterou taková výuka může přinést. V teoretické části budou představeny základní pojmy a jejich vztah k základním konceptům na základě odborné literatury a aktuálních výzkumů. Dále bude popsána současná typologie umělé inteligence a nástrojů založených na umělé inteligenci. Poznatky z těchto kapitol poslouží jako rámec pro kritické hodnocení v současnosti dostupných nástrojů založených na umělé inteligenci a výběr vhodných AI nástrojů pro výuku anglického jazyka. Na teoretickou část práce navazuje praktická část, která je zaměřena na případovou studii vybraných tříd základní školy. Ve výzkumné části bude proveden kvantitativní výzkum s využitím dotazníků mezi žáky a budou zkoumány názory a zkušenosti českých žáků s nástroji umělé inteligence. Rovněž se práce věnuje analýze chování a postojů učitele a žáků, u nichž byla během experimentu do výuky anglického jazyka zařazena umělá inteligence, jakožto podpůrný nástroj. Praktická část práce popisuje, jak žáci hodnotí práci s umělou inteligencí. Výzkum je proveden metodou pozorování tříd a konsolidací zpětné vazby od žáků, která je provedena dotazníky. Výsledky výzkumu budou využity k zodpovězení formulovaných výzkumných otázek s využitím vhodných statistických metod a s přihlédnutím k poznatkům z výuky. Závěr práce shrnuje společné tendence i odlišnosti jednotlivých hodin, a efektivitu uplatněných postupů.
