Family support as a way of coping with stress in children with learning disabilities

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo převážně zjistit, jak děti se specifickými poruchami učení vnímají oporu ve své rodině, jaké jsou hlavní zdroje zátěže, které plynou z diagnózy SPU a jak spolu tyto oblasti souvisí. Dále jsem se zaměřila i na to, jaký druh opory pomáhá a naopak, který nepomáhá. V teoretické části byly definovány poruchy učení, nastíněny oblasti zátěže, které mohou pramenit z poruch učení a byly přiblíženy specifika rodin s dětmi se SPU a sociální oporu, kterou poskytují. Výzkum byl zaměřen na 7 dětí ze specializovaných tříd, které vypovídaly o tom, jak vnímají zátěž, která pramení ze SPU a jakým způsobem rodiče pomáhají či nepomáhají. Data byla získána pomocí polostrukturovaného dotazníku a zpracována pomocí zakotvené teorie. Výsledky této kvalitativní studie ukazují, jakou zátěž představují poruchy učení (zátěž plynoucí ze školy, dále obavy z negativních reakcí okolí, strach ze zklamání rodiny, a obavy o svou budoucnost). Děti sami vědí, jak by měla správně vypadat ideální opora poskytovaná rodinou, ale vesměs takovou nedostávají. Jako ideální oporu vidí emocionální a praktickou oporu, oporu ve formě společných aktivit a spolehnutí se na ostatní. Taky sem řadí určité zachování autonomie. Na druhé straně se děti setkávají i s negativní sociální oporou. Její nedostatky tkví v neadekvátním očekávání rodiny, negativní emocionální opoře a nezájmu. Děti kompenzují nedostatky v opoře, i když v menší míře, náhradní sociální oporou, uchýlení se ke svým zájmům a zálibám. Vnímání opory od rodiny závisí také na tom, jaké mají děti s danými členy rodiny vztahy a jak přijali jejich diagnózu.

Abstract:

My thesis deals with children with learning disabilities in special education. The research focused on exploration what children with LD consider as a stress and how do they percieve family support. In the first theoretical part, definitions and types of learning disabilities were described and what kind of stress children have to deal with. Attention was paid to the specifics of families with children with LD and social support within these families. The qualitative research was targeted on seven children from special classes, who talked about their experiences with stress that comes from diagnoses of LD and their support from family. The data were gained via semi-structured questionnaire and analyzed according to grounded theory. It can be deduced from results that the major areas of stress are: school, future, negative perception of others and dissapoitment of parents. Children know how should social support look like, but they often see it as insufficient. Among ideal social support they include emotional and practical support, shared activities, relience on others, and certain amount of autonomy. They also face to negative support like inadequate expectation from families, negative emotional support and lack of interest. Therefore, children try to compensate the lack of support by searching for other sources of support. Perception of received family support depends on the relationship between the children and their relatives and how did they accepted their diagnosis.
