Media representation of mental illness in contemporary video games

Abstract:

Tato výzkumná diplomová práce se zabývá reprezentací duševních onemocnění v současných videohrách. Postavy trpící duševní nemocí se ve hrách objevují zcela běžně. Často je však jejich obraz pojímán stereotypně nebo nerealisticky. Role takovýchto postav je pak hráče buď pobavit nebo vystrašit. V posledních letech se začínají častěji objevovat hry zaměřující se na realistickou reprezentaci dané problematiky. Jejich cílem je mimo jiné zvýšit povědomí o duševních onemocněních a destigmatizovat je. Počátky těchto tendencí lze pozorovat u nezávislých her. Postupně se tento trend začíná projevovat také u mainstreamové videoherní produkce. Zatím nejvýraznějším AAA titulem zabývající se danou problematikou je hra Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. Právě tato hra je zkoumána v této práci. Výzkum je pojímán jako případová studie využívající metody multimodální sémiotické analýzy. Pomocí ní je možné prozkoumat nejen samotnou reprezentaci ale také nástroje, pomocí kterých je realistického zobrazení duševního onemocnění dosaženo.

Abstract:

This research diploma thesis focuses on the representation of mental disorders in contemporary videogames. Characters suffering from these disorders appear in videogames frequently. However, their portrayal is oftentimes stereotypical or unrealistic. The role of such characters is to either amuse the player or frighten them. In recent years, videogames focusing on a realistic portrayal of the matter have been surfacing more often. The aim of this is to spread awareness of psychological disorders and destigmatise them. The beginning of these tendencies come from indie games. Gradually, the trend is starting to take root in mainstream videogame production. The best known AAA title that focuses on the matter of psychological disorder is the game called Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. This thesis research is focused on this game. The research has the form of a case study using the method of multimodal semiotic analysis. The chosen method allows for research not only into the representation itself but the tools used to portray the mental disorder.
