Visualization of Digital Terrain Models Using Hardware Accelerated Rendering

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá oblastí vizualizace geografických dat, která v sobě spojuje principy a techniky virtuální reality s metodami geografických informačních systémů. Práce uvádí základní charakteristiky virtuální reality a podstatné rysy současných mainstreamových vizualizačních technik, jejichž základem je hardwarová akcelerace. Využití grafických procesorů pro urychlení výpočtů přináší obrovský potenciál, vyžaduje však přizpůsobení algoritmů a datových struktur tak, aby byly kompatibilní s hardwarovou infrastrukturou a využívaly ji efektivně. Základem virtuálního geografického prostředí je zobrazený terén, tedy povrch litosféry prostý dalších sfér. Vykreslování terénů závisí na vhodné podobě vstupních geografických dat. Nejběžnější a často také jedinou formou popisu tvaru terénu dostupnou v geografických informačních systémech jsou vrstevnice. Ty však samy o sobě nejsou vhodné pro trojrozměrnou vizualizaci terénu, který z nich nejprve musí být rekonstruován. V literatuře se objevuje několik různých přístupů k tomuto problému, většina trpí různými nedostatky. Práce navrhuje algoritmus rekonstrukce pravidelné mřížky elevací z vrstevnic, který těží z vlastností vrstevnic jako řezů funkce dvou proměnných ekvidistantními rovinami rovnoběžnými s rovinou proměnných a zároveň z jejich datové reprezentace. Pro vlastní vykreslování terénů práce navrhuje dva algoritmy, jeden pro generování a zobrazování trojúhelníkové sítě s ohledem na současnou architekturu hardwarově akcelerovaného řetězce vykreslování a druhý pro management textur, jejichž datový objem překračuje limity dané programovacím rozhraním a hardwarem. Sjednocuje tak řešení problému vizualizace digitálního modelu terénu a problému jeho pokrývání další rastrovou informací, jimiž se většina autorů zabývá odděleně. Implementace a testování algoritmů i vývoj prototypů v oblasti virtuální reality vyžadují flexibilní a snadno modifikovatelnou softwarovou architekturu, která zároveň poskytuje vysoký aplikační výkon. Objektové programování a jeho obohacení principem Dependency Injenction, technika zásuvných modulů a doplňování aplikací interprety dynamických jazyků k takovým architekturám vedou, zřídkakdy jsou však používány současně. V rámci disertační práce byl navržen a implementován skriptovatelný komponentní framework, jenž těží z rychlosti jazyka C++, na který však není omezen.

Abstract:

The doctoral thesis deals with the area of geographical data visualization, which combines the principles and techniques of virtual reality with the methods of geographical information systems. The thesis describes basic characteristics of virtual reality and significant properties of current mainstream hardware accelerated visualization techniques. The usage of graphics processors has a great potential but it requires modifications of algorithms and data structures so that they are compatible with the hardware infrastructure and use it efficiently. The basis for a virtual geographical environment is the visualized terrain, i.e. surface of the lithosphere free of other spheres. Terrain visualization depends on appropriate input geographical data. Contour lines are the most common and often the only form of terrain relief description available in geographical information systems. However, they are not themselves suitable for spatial terrain visualization. Several different approaches to the problem of terrain reconstruction from contours exist, all with various drawbacks. The thesis proposes an approach that takes advantage of contour lines being bivariate function sections by equidistant planes and also of their data representation. For the terrain visualization itself the thesis proposes an algorithm that generates and renders triangular network with respect to the current architecture of hardware accelerated rendering pipeline and an algorithm that manages textures with data sizes exceeding the limits imposed by hardware and programming interfaces. Thus it unites the solution to the problem of digital terrain model visualization with the task of covering it with raster information. Algorithm implementation and testing and prototype development in the area of virtual reality require a flexible and easily modifiable software architecture which at the same time provides high application performance. Object oriented programming and its enhancement with the principles of dependency injection, plug-in techniques and dynamic languages lead to such architectures but seldom are used in accord. Within the scope of the thesis an efficient and extensible programmable component framework has been designed and implemented.
