Diminutives in Specialist Botanical Texts

Abstract:

This thesis deals with diminutives in specialist botanical language.The corpus consists of two textbooks from the beginning of the 20th century, one from 2014 and a dictionary of German plant names, which was reissued in the original version in 2000. The contemporary state of research of German diminutives, in which contrastive studies prevail, was characterized. Lexicalized forms of diminutives, diminutives in specialist language, are considered a random feature in linguistics and have not largely been dealt with so far. In linguistics they are often called quasi-diminutives or even dead diminutives. Attention was paid to the formation of synthetic and analytic diminutives and to the changes in the use of diminutives in specialist botanical language and their function over one century. The development of the specialist botanical language was presented. An analysis of the corpus from a morphological and semantic point of view was carried out. The diminutive forms were semantically divided into the following categories: plant parts names, plant names and objects. It was further followed whether diminutives occur in other specialist texts or in general language. German diminutive plant names were analysed. Part of this thesis is a supplement, containing the diminutive forms from the specialist textbooks and an overview of the plant names from the German dictionary not only according to the synthetic and analytical forms but also according to their suffixes.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá deminutivy v odborném jazyce botaniky. Jako korpus byly vybrány dvě učebnice botaniky ze začátku 20. století, jedna z roku 2014 a slovník německých názvů rostlin, který byl jako původní dílo znovu vydán v roce 2000. Byl charakterizován současný stav výzkumu deminutiv v německém jazyce, ve kterém převažují kontrastivní práce. Lexikalizované tvary deminutiv, tedy i deminutiva v odborném jazyce jsou považovány za okrajový jev a dosud jim nebyla věnována dostatečná pozornost. V lingvistice jsou často označována jako nepravá, kvazi-deminutiva či dokonce mrtvá deminutiva. Pozornost byla věnována tvorbě deminutiv, a to jak syntetických, tak i analytických. Byly sledovány změny v používání deminutiv v odborném jazyce botaniky ve vybraných učebnicích a jejich funkce v průběhu jednoho století. Byl nastíněn vývoj odborného jazyka botaniky. Byla provedena analýza korpusu z morfologického a sémantického hlediska. Deminutivní tvary byly rozděleny sémanticky do kategorií části rostlin, názvy rostlin a věci. Bylo zkoumáno, zda se tato deminutiva vyskytují také v jiných oborech nebo v obecném jazyce. Německé deminutivní názvy rostlin byly analyzovány a komparovány. Součástí práce je příloha, obsahující rozdělené deminutivní tvary z odborných učebnic a přehled názvů rostlin z německého slovníku nejen podle syntetických a analytických tvarů, ale i podle jednotlivých deminutivních sufixů.
