The Renaissance scepticism: Michel de Montaigne

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem práce je renesanční skepticismus a jeho přední představitel Michel de Montaigne (1533?1592). Stručně je nastíněn sociokulturní kontext renesanční Francie, následuje krátká charakteristika filosofického myšlení renesanční doby, především je popsán humanismus a problém pravidla víry, které bylo intenzivněji diskutováno v době náboženských sporů. Následně je popsán antický skepticismus: tři zásadní otázky vedoucí ke skepticismu definované pravděpodobným zakladatelem antického skepticismu Pyrrhónem z Élidy (kolem 360?270 př. K.), deset tropů, jejichž prostřednictvím bylo zpochybněno smyslové poznání a kritika racionálního poznání. V dalším oddílu jsou uvedena základní životopisná data Michela de Montaigne a je sledováno Montaignovo filosofické myšlení. Montaigne se se skepticismem seznámil v době osobní krize víry. Na základě tropů nově promýšlel možnosti lidského poznání a došel k závěru, že lidské poznávací schopnosti jsou příliš omezené a nejisté a jediná pravda, na kterou se může člověk spolehnout, je poznání založené na víře v Boha. Montaignovo filosofické myšlení je sledováno na základě Esejů, jeho jediného, ovšem zásadního díla. Pozornost je věnována zvláště eseji Apologie Raimunda ze Sabundy, ve kterém je nejintenzivněji doložen Montaignův skepticismus.

Abstract:

The main topic of this thesis is the Renaissance skepticism and its leading representative Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592). There is briefly outlined the sociocultural context of Renaissance France, next follow a brief characterization of philosophical thought of the Renaissance period, mainly is described humanism and the problem of rules of faith, which was intensively discussed at the time of religious disputes. Then there is described ancient skepticism: the three basic questions leading to skepticism and defined by the founder of ancient skepticism Pyrrho of Elis (c. 360-270 B.C.), ten tropes, through which was challenged sense knowledge and rational understanding. The next section describes basic biography of Michel de Montaigne and its philosophical thinking. Montaigne met with skepticism at the time of personal crisis of faith. On basic of tropes he re-thinks the possibilities of human knowledge and concluded that human cognitive abilities are very limited and uncertain, and the only truth to which one can rely is the knowledge based on faith in God. Montaigne´s philosophical thought is followed on Essay, his only one, but fundamental work. Attention is particularly devoted to the essay Apologie de Raimond Sabond, in which is the most intensively documented Montaigne´s skepticism.
