Analysis of chosen themes and motifs in Neil Gaiman's short stories

Abstract:

The aim of this master thesis is to analyze and compare chosen themes and motifs present in two short story collections by Neil Gaiman - Smoke and Mirrors (2005) and Trigger Warning (2015). Firstly, a brief introduction of Neil Gaiman, overview of the relevant literature on the topic of Gaiman's writing as well as theoretical basis of themes and motifs is provided. Next, the themes and motifs of the two short story collections are analyzed in order in which the collections were published. The final chapter consists of the comparison of the themes and motifs found in the collections and the way they are realized. Through the comparison of the findings of the analyses, it was concluded that most of the themes and motifs are present in both collections, but for example the theme of childhood can only be found in the older collection. There are differences in the way the themes are realized as well. Notably, while in Smoke and Mirrors many of the themes were connected to sexuality, it is not true in Trigger Warning.

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je analyzovat a srovnat vybraná témata a motivy dvou povídkových sbírek Neila Gaimana - Smoke and Mirrors (2005) a Trigger Warning (2015). Před analýzou je představen autor Neil Gaiman, poskytnut přehled relevantní literatury k tématu práce a teoretický základ týkající se témat a motivů. Následuje samotná analýza témat a motivů obou sbírek v pořadí, v jakém byly vydány. Závěrečnou kapitolou práce je pak srovnání poznatků vyplývajících z analýz. Skrze toto srovnání bylo zjištěno, že většina témat a motivů se objevuje v obou sbírkách, ačkoli například téma dětství se objevuje pouze ve starší sbírce, a rozdíly byly také v realizaci jednotlivých témat. Za zmínku stojí například fakt, že zatímco mnohá témata byla ve Smoke and Mirrors spojena se sexualitou, v Trigger Warning tomu tak není.
