Motivating Learners through Using Games in English Lessons

Abstract:

V současné době je motivace žáků a utváření pozitivního vztahu k vyučovanému předmětu stěžejním úkolem pedagogů. Jedním z možných způsobů je motivace žáka použitím her ve výuce. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá pozitivním vlivem zařazení různých her do výuky anglického jazyka, a to na 1. a 2. stupni základní školy. Vyzdvihuje problémy, které mohou nastat a poskytuje rady, jak těmto nepředvídaným situacím předejít. Teoretická část nastiňuje důležitost motivace v procesu učení, typy motivace, historii a různé typy her, jejich funkci a zařazení do hodin angličtiny. Jedna z kapitol je věnována žákům se specifickými poruchami učení a možnosti, jak tyto žáky motivovat prostřednictvím hry. Praktická část se zaměřuje na využití různých didaktických her při výuce angličtiny. Obsahuje seznam her k procvičení jazykových dovedností (čtení, psaní, mluvení, poslech), instrukce a výsledky pozorování z hodin, ve kterých byly tyto aktivity využity. Všechny zmíněné hry a aktivity byly prakticky vyzkoušeny v autorčiných hodinách. Cílem této práce je dokázat, že dobře připravená hra může vést k lepší motivaci žáka a zlepšit úroveň jazykových dovedností v oblasti čtení, psaní, mluvení a poslechu. Práce obsahuje vlastní překlady autorky.

Abstract:

The role of todays educators is to motivate learners and build a positive attitude towards the school subject. One of the possible ways of motivation is through using games. This thesis deals with positive aspects of adding various games into English lessons at primary and lower-secondary schools. It points out problems which could appear when using games inefficiently and gives advice how to prevent unexpected situations. The theoretical part describes the importance of motivation, its types, history and different types of games, their function and implementation in classes. One chapter is devoted to learners with special learning disabilities and the possibility of motivating them via games. The practical part focuses on practical use of games in lessons at primary and lower-secondary schools in ELT. It contains a list of games for practising language skills with the instructions how to play them and results of practical observations. All the games and activities mentioned were tested by the author in her classes. The goal of the thesis is to prove that a well-prepared game can lead to learners´better motivation and improve language skills in the areas of speaking, writing, reading and listening. The thesis contains the author´s own translations.
