The Analysis of two translations of french passages in the novel "War and Peace"

Abstract:

Diploma thesis called "The Analysis of two translations of French passages in the novel War and Peace" aims to analyze two distinct translations of French passages in the novel War and Peace. The heart of the thesis lies in comparison of translations made by Veronika Sysalová and another one by Tamara and Vilém Sýkora. Accenting mistakes in both texts, we focus on translation methods, lexicon, syntax and stylistics. At least some mistakes were identified in lexical, stylistic or semantic aspects of the translations. Moreover, the analysis leads to an interesting question regarding forms, functions and roles of the foreign language passages in the literature. We debate the question in the second part of the thesis.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce s názvem „Analyse de deux traductions des passages français dans le roman de Tolstoï La Guerre et la Paix“ si klade za cíl analyzovat překlady francouzských pasáží v románu Vojna a mír. Jádrem je srovnání překladů Veroniky Sysalové a Tamary a Viléma Sýkorových z hlediska překladatelských postupů, lexika, syntaxe a stylistiky, a to především s důrazem na chyby, kterých se překladatelé dopustili. Ty byly nalezeny jak v oblasti lexikální či stylistické, tak i v rovině sémantické. Rozbor zmíněných překladů také vede k zajímavé otázce funkčnosti a formy cizojazyčných pasáží v literatuře, které se blíže věnuje druhá část textu.
