The Little Mermaid and Its Film Adaptations

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá Malou mořskou vílou a jejími filmovými adaptacemi. První část se věnuje mytologii mořských panen. Poté se blíže soustřeďuje na tento fenomén v současnosti. Další kapitoly se zaměřují na Hanse Christiana Andersena a především na jeho tvorbu. Analyzuje jeho pohádkový příběh Malá mořská víla především s přihlédnutím na motivy a poselství, které se v něm objevují. V praktické části se zaměříme na tři adaptace; Malou mořskou vílu (1976) Karla Kachyni, Ponyo z útesu nad mořem (2008) Hajaho Mijazakiho a Vábení Sirén (2015) Agnieszky Smoczynské. Zodpovíme si otázky, jak si tito tři tvůrci poradili s postavou hlavní hrdinky, jak ve filmech pracují s vizuální stránkou a jaké reference, ať už folklorní či popkulturní, v nich využívají. V neposlední řadě jak Andersenův původní příběh adaptovali na film. Karel Kachyňa vytvořil vizuálně podmanivou smutnou baladu o světě, kde neexistuje jednoznačný rozdíl mezi absolutním dobrem a absolutním zlem. Mijazaki vychází z mnoha motivů předlohy, ale nabízí nám svoji pozitivnější interpretaci, která vkládá více důvěry v lásku i lidství než Andersen či Kachyňa. Oproti Smoczynska ve Vábení Sirén ukazuje skoro až antitezi Malé mořské víly. Právě na této široké škále přístupů můžeme ale vidět univerzálnost Andersenova příběhu a také rozsah symbolů a motivů, jež postava mořské panny v sobě může nést.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with "The Little Mermaid" and its film adaptations. The first part focuses on the mythology of mermaids. It then delves deeper into this phenomenon in the present day. Subsequent chapters concentrate on Hans Christian Andersen and, above all, his work. It analyzes his fairy tale "The Little Mermaid," primarily considering the motifs and messages that appear in it. In the practical part, we will focus on three adaptations: "The Little Mermaid" (1976) by Karel Kachyňa, "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea" (2008) by Hayao Miyazaki, and "The Lure" (2015) by Agnieszka Smoczyńska. We will answer questions about how these three creators dealt with the main character, how they worked with the visual aspects in the films, and what references, whether folkloric or pop-cultural, they used. Lastly, we will explore how they adapted Andersen's original story into a film. Karel Kachyňa created a visually captivating, melancholic ballad about a world where there is no clear distinction between absolute good and absolute evil. Miyazaki draws on many motifs from the source material but offers us a more positive interpretation, placing more trust in love and humanity than Andersen or Kachyňa. In contrast, Smoczyńska's "The Lure" shows an almost antithesis of "The Little Mermaid." It is precisely this wide range of approaches that allows us to see the universality of Andersen's story and the range of symbols and motifs that the character of the mermaid can embody.
