The influence of immigrants from British ex-colonies on English gastronomy in metropolitan London

Abstract:

This thesis examines the influence of immigrants from the former British colonies on English gastronomy through different stages, starting from the mass immigration of South Asians to Britain in the 1950s and the introduction of their authentic spicy dishes to the present day when these dishes are regarded as part of British culture. This work is based on information I gathered from my interviews with South Asian restaurant owners and their customers in London in 2016. The study indicates the advantage of British multicultural society where the combination of immigrants' and Britons' willingness to co-exist with other nationalities plays a positive role in changing British cuisine.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá vlivem emigrantů z bývalých britských kolonií na gastronomii ve Velké Británii napříč různými vývojovými etapami, počínaje padesátými léty dvacátého století. Tehdy přišly do Spojeného království velké vlny emigrantů ze severní Indie a s nimi i jejich tradiční jídla, která zakořenila v britské společnosti a stala se součástí jejich kultury. Tato práce je založená na informacích vyplývajících z mých rozhovorů s majiteli indických restaurací a jejich zákazníky v Londýně. Závěrem studie poukazuji na výhody britské multikulturní společnosti, kde propojení kultury emigrantů s tolerancí Britů přináší pozitivní dopad na jejich gastronomii.
