An Analysis of Practical English Textbooks for Nursing Students

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou učebnic používaných v hodinách Praktické angličtiny na střední zdravotnické škole Grohova v Brně. Teoretická část poskytuje informace o analýze učebnic, představuje Maturitní zkoušku tak, jak je strukturována v České republice, poukazuje na situace, ve kterých se postgraduální studenti mohou setkat s využitím anglického jazyka, a popisuje důvody pro náležitý jazykový výcvik studentů oboru Praktická sestra. Dále také zkoumá Rámcový vzdělávací program. Na základě prezentovaných teoretických podkladů jsou stanoveny výzkumné otázky. Empirická část dále popisuje střední zdravotnickou školu, na které byl výzkum konán, představuje studenty, jenž se zapojili do výzkumu, stejně tak jako analyzované učebnice. Metody využívané při výzkumu jsou také součástí empirické části práce, společně s nasbíranými daty a jejich analýzou. Cílem práce je zhodnotit, zda jsou analyzované učebnice používané v hodinách Praktické Angličtiny schopny dostatečně připravit studenty na jejich maturitní zkoušku, situace z reálného života, ve kterých mohou anglický jazyk využít, a také na jejich budoucí práci v nemocnicích. Práce dále zkoumá možné limity výzkumu stejně tak jako jeho další možná budoucí využití.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the analysis of textbooks used in Practical English lessons of the nursing study program at the upper secondary school for nurses Grohova in Brno. The theoretical part provides information about textbook analysis, presents the format of the Maturita Examination as it is used in the Czech Republic, delves into situations in which postgraduate students might continue using the English language and it introduces reasons why a proper language training is necessary for nursing students. It also examines the Educational Framework Program. Based on the theoretical background, the research questions are arranged. The empirical part then describes the upper secondary school at which the study was carried out, introduces the students participating in the research as well as the analysed textbooks. Methods used in the research are also presented along with the collected data and its analysis. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate whether the presented textbooks used in the Practical Language lessons can sufficiently prepare the students of the nursing study program for their Maturita Examination, real life situations in which English language might be used and their future hospital career. The thesis also explores the possible limitations of the research as well as feasible further studies.
