Teachers’ Attitudes of the Use of English Children’s Literature in the Primary EFL Classroom

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá postoji učitelů k využití anglické dětské literatury ve výuce angličtiny jako cizího jazyka na základních školách. Teoretická část se věnuje charakteristikám žáků mladšího školního věku, rozvoji čtenářské gramotnosti, jejímu propojení s mateřským jazykem i cizím jazykem, v tomto případě angličtinou, využívání dětské literatury ve výuce angličtiny na 1.stupni ZŠ, včetně metody sdíleného čtení a multisenzorického přístupu. Praktická část zahrnuje dvě intervence realizované výzkumníkem ve dvou třídách 5. ročníku. Dvě učitelky byly seznámeny s metodou sdíleného čtení v kombinaci s multisenzorickým přístupem. Po realizaci intervencí a pozorováních byly s učitelkami angličtiny provedeny dva polostrukturované rozhovory a jeden rozhovor s odborníkem na sdílené čtení. Zapamatování slovní zásoby a frází bylo testováno na základě standardizovaných přípravných materiálů úrovně Pre A1 Starters (dle SERR) zaměřených na čtení a psaní. Testová verze pro hodnocení intervence sdíleného čtení byla vyvinuta autorkou a vyplnili ji všichni žáci, kteří se výzkumu zúčastnili.

Abstract:

This thesis examines teachers’ attitudes toward using English children’s literature in primary EFL. The theoretical part reviews young learners’ characteristics, reading literacy development, its link to L1 and L2, use of children’s literature in EFL, including the shared reading method and the multisensory approach. The practical part involves two interventions by the researcher in two 5th-grade classes. The shared reading method combined with a multisensory approach was introduced to two teachers. After the intervention and observations, two semi-structured interviews were conducted with the English teachers, along with an interview with a shared reading expert. The retention of vocabulary and phrases was tested using standardised preparatory materials at the Pre A1 Starters level (according to the CEFR), focusing on reading and writing. The test version for evaluating the shared reading intervention was developed by the author and completed by all the pupils, who took part in the research.
