Kinesthetic Way of English Learning of Secondary Schools

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá kinestetickým stylem učení a motivací. Práce se snaží zjistit, jaká je reakce a motivace žáků na přelomu druhého stupně ZŠ a SŠ vzdělání s pokročilou úrovní angličtiny, jsou-li vystaveni sérii kinestetických aktivit, a jak úspěšní budou při plnění cílů těchto úkolů. Po specifikování teoretického kontextu kinestetického učení a motivace, byla sestavena série kinestetických aktivit (viz kapitola 5.3). Kinestetické aktivity byly vyzkoušeny ve třech skupinách žáků Anglického jazyka na dvou různých gymnáziích v České republice. U každé aktivity byl vyplněn krátký sebe-reflektivní dotazník ohledně úkolové motivace souběžně s observačním formulářem, který vyplňoval vyučující. Analýza a porovnání těchto dat byly doplněny daty z úvodních a závěrečných dotazníků, které byly vyplněny žáky před a po intervenci. Úvodní dotazník odhalil, že obecná motivace žáků k učení Anglického jazyka je adekvátní a že neměli příliš velkou zkušenost s kinestetickým způsobem učení. Z výsledků závěrečného dotazníku vyplývá, že celkový přístup naprosté většiny žáků, byl přijímavý souhlas s kinestetickými aktivitami. Tato pozitivní reakce byla podpořena většinovým názorem, že podobné kinestetické aktivity jsou zároveň užitečné a zábavné. Výsledky úkolových dotazníků a observací ukázaly, že osm ze třinácti kinestetických aktivit vyzkoušených v rámci této práce, byly v očích žáků považovány za velmi motivující. Z výsledků práce také vyplývá potřeba dalšího a hlubšího zkoumání kinestetického způsobu učení a jeho efektivity z dlouhodobějšího hlediska.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the kinesthetic learning and motivation. It seeks to determine what is the reaction and motivation of secondary school advanced learners of English when exposed to a series of kinesthetic activities and how will the learners do in fulfilling the tasks. After introducing the theoretical background for kinesthetic learning and motivation, a set of kinesthetic activities was compiled (see chapter 5.3). The kinesthetic activities have been tried out in three groups of EFL learners in two different grammar schools in the Czech Republic. In each activity a short task self-report questionnaire concerning task motivation was carried out besides an observation filled in by the teacher. The analysis and comparison of these data were framed by data from initial and final self-report questionnaires carried out before and after the intervention. The initial self-report questionnaires revealed the learners‘ general motivation to learn English was adequate and that they have not had very extensive experience with kinesthetic way of learning. The final self-report questionnaires‘ results show that an overall attitude of the vast majority of the learners was a positive acceptance and approval of the kinesthetic activities. Their positive reaction was supported by strong belief that such activities are useful and entertaining at the same time. As the results of task self-report questionnaires and observations suggested, eight out of the thirteen kinesthetic activities dealt with in this thesis reported high degrees of motivation in the EFL learners. The thesis has shown the need to look into kinesthetic learning and its effectiveness more deeply and in a more longitudinal way.
