The reflection of senior population through Czech media in the time of population aging

Abstract:

Cílem této magisterské diplomové práce s názvem „Česká mediální reflexe seniorů v době populačního stárnutí“ je odhalit obraz stáří a seniorů tak, jak je konstruován v deníku Právo a v deníku Mladá fronta DNES, a tyto pak následně mezi sebou porovnat. A to na základě teoretického rámce, jenž je vystavěn z popisu stereotypního vnímání seniorů a stáří samotného ve spojení s médii, které na jeho vytváření značně spolupracují. Samotná analýza je provedena na celkem 580 novinových článcích rozřazených do jednotlivých tématických kategorií, které byly blíže zkoumány. A na jejich základě pak bylo popsáno jakým způsobem jsou senioři a stáří samotné reprezentováni ve vybraných tištěných periodikách. Problematika stáří a života ve vyšším věku je stále více hodna zájmu odborné i laické veřejnosti, jelikož populační stárnutí s sebou přináší mnoho změn vyplývajících z proměny struktury populace.

Abstract:

The aim of this master's thesis entitled "The reflection of senior population through Czech media in the time of population aging" is to reveal the image of old age and the elderly as it is painted in Právo and in Mladá Fronta DNES daily newspapers and than subsequently compare the two with each other. The juxtaposition is based on theoretical framework that is built according to the description of stereotypical perceptions of old people and the elderly in general in connection with the media, partly responsible for that portrayal. The actual analysis is performed on a total of 580 newspaper articles subdivided into individual thematic categories that were further investigated. On that basis, it is possible to describe how the elderly and the seniors themselves are represented in selected newspapers. The issue of age and life in old age is increasingly worthy of our interest, either of professionals or wide public as it is mainly because the aging of population brings along many changes resulting in shifting general structure of population.
