Variability in the composition of land-snail communities in semi-natural forest habitats

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na environmentální a geografické faktory ovlivňující druhové složení a bohatost společenstev suchozemských plžů v přírodě blízkých lesních stanovištích. Rešeršní část se věnuje faktorům prostředí, které ovlivňují výskyt suchozemských plžů, dále charakteristikám biogeografických podprovincií a vegetačních stupňů na Moravě a také historickému vývoji přírody v Evropě v období kvartéru. V praktické části práce bylo analyzováno druhové složení společenstev suchozemských plžů ve třech biogeografických podprovinciích (Hercynská, Západokarpatská a Severopanonská) a napříč pěti vegetačními stupni, a to v 1. & 2., 3., 5., a v 7. v. s. Byl testován vliv různých faktorů prostředí na variabilitu druhové bohatosti a skladby plžů. Celkem bylo nalezeno 8001 jedinců patřících k 80 druhům plžů. Nejvíce druhů i jedinců bylo nalezeno na hercynských a karpatských lokalitách 5. vegetačního stupně, naopak nejméně druhů i jedinců bylo nalezeno v lokalitách nacházejících se v Severopanonské podprovincii v 1. & 2. vegetačním stupni. Nicméně nižší počty plžů byly nalezeny i v Hercynské podprovincii, avšak jednalo se o oblasti náležící do 7. smrkového vegetačního stupně. Jako faktory s významným vlivem na počet druhů plžů byly identifikovány pH a nadmořská výška, což bylo potvrzeno ordinační analýzou. Při zkoumání variability společenstev suchozemských plžů v podprovinciích a vegetačních stupních bylo zjištěno, že plži druhovým složením lépe sledovali vegetační stupňovitost než geografické rozložení.

Abstract:

This Bachelor's Thesis focuses on environmental and geographical factors affecting species composition and biodiversity of land snails in semi-natural forest habitats. Theoretical part of the thesis is dedicated to the environmental factors which affect the occurrence of land snails, as well as to the characteristics of altitudinal vegetation zones and biogeographical regions in Moravia. Furthermore, the historical development of nature in Europe in the Quarternary Period is also presented. In the analytical part of this thesis, species composition of land snail communities in the three different regions (Hercynian, Western Carpathian and North Pannonian) and five altitudinal vegetation zones (1. & 2., 3., 5. and 7.) was compared. The effects of two environmental factors (pH and altitude) on the variability in species composition was also tested. In total, 8001 individuals of 80 species of land snails were discovered. The highest numbers of individuals as well as species were found on localities belonging to the Hercynian and Western Carpathian regions and the 5. altitudinal vegetation zone. The poorest localities belong to the Northern Pannonian region and the 1. & 2. altitudinal vegetation zones. However, far lower numbers of individuals were found in the 7. altitudinal vegetation zone of the Hercynian region but this can be attributed to the unfavourable conditions in spruce forests. Ordination analysis revealed that soil pH and altitude had statistically significant effects on the composition of land snail communities. Investigation of variation in land snail communities among biogeographical regions and altitudinal vegetation zones revealed that the composition of communities was affected more by the altitudinal vegetation zone than by the biogeographical region.
