Bobbin Lace as a Community, Social and Economic Phenomenon

Abstract:

Teze disertační práce shrnují zaměření vlastní disertační práce, která byla věnována paličkované krajce jako výraznému společenskému, kulturnímu a ekonomickému fenoménu 16.-20. století. Paličkovaná krajka se užívala v minulosti nejen na lidových oděvních součástkách a bytovém textilu. Krajkářskou výrobou se zabývalo velké procento venkovské populace v českých , slezských a částečně i moravských regionech. Tato činnost se odrazila i ve způsobu života místních lidí, kteří se krajkářství věnovali po velkou část dne. Krajkářství sice nebylo příliš výnosným zaměstnáním, přesto se k němu lidé stále uchylovali. Bylo tomu tak v krajích, kde chudoba a nedostatečné možnosti jiného výdělku nedovolovaly nalézt lepší zdroj příjmu k zabezpečení rodiny. Krajky byly výrobkem putujícím za svým uživatelem často na velké vzdálenosti. Trasy obchodu s krajkou zatím není možné plně rekonstruovat. V předložené práci jsme se pokusili zrekapitulovat známé skutečnosti a poukázat blíže na situaci na Vamberecku. Zde jsme shledali nejen jména místních obchodníků, ale též jména cizích, kteří sem pravidelně nebo nepravidelně docházeli. S krajkou se obchodovalo na velké vzdálenosti a tudíž není možné vždy spolehlivě identifikovat, odkud která krajka pocházela. Identifikaci navíc ztěžuje fakt, že řada druhů paličkovaných krajek byla zhotovována současně na několika místech nejen v českém a moravském prostředí ale také např. na Slovensku. Vlastní identifikace krajek je složitá a základem musí být znalost produkce všech středisek v průběhu dějinného vývoje. Jedině tak lze vystopovat určité charakteristické rysy, které odhalují produkci z určitého střediska. Svět objevil krásu a jedinečnost lidové krajky z našeho prostředí až velmi pozdě, až na přelomu 19. a 20. století. Tato skutečnost již do vývoje lidového krajkářství příliš nezasáhla. Ačkoli zájem o krajky podnítil velkou vlnu sběratelství, odbyt nových výrobků se nezvedl. Krajky ustupovaly ze šatníků a domácností a současně se snižoval i počet krajkářek a krajkářů. Nivelizace krajkářské tradice byla uspíšena v posledních desetiletích 19. století a v prvních desetiletích 20. století poklesem výroby a zásluhou vzorníků propagovaných vídeňským krajkářských ústavem. Svérázové snahy se v případě oděvní tvorby ukázaly jako slepá cesta. V průběhu 19. století jsme svědky upadání estetické hodnoty lidových textilií zdobených krajkou a výšivkou. Bylo to vyvoláno několika faktory. Jednak se krajka stává dostupnější, jednak se od poloviny 19. století opakovaně objevovaly nové jednodušší textilní techniky jakými byly např. tenerifa nebo háčkovaná krajka. Všechny uvedené faktory přispěly k vytěsnění tradiční výzdoby a tedy i krajky. V muzejních fondech je uchováno množstvím necitlivých kompozicí lidových textilií pocházejících právě z této doby. Paličkovaná krajka se natrvalo či přechodně nahradila jinými výrobky, nejčastěji strojovou či háčkovanou krajkou, tylem s výšivkou či bez ní nebo se paličkovaná krajka užívá na oděvy a textilie, kde se dříve neuplatnila. Úsilí po nalezení nového uplatnění a odbytu ruční krajce, vedla ke snahám po zapojení krajky do slohového oděvu, a to již od čtyřicátých let 19. století. Pod vlivem svérázu se pokoušeli ve dvacátých letech 20. století výtvarníci o zapojení rustikálních krajkových motivů do výzdoby bytového textilu i oděvních doplňků. Estetické kvality takových výrobků byly poměrně vysoké. Další vývoj módy však směřoval jiným směrem. chivními a ikonografickými prameny, s odbornou literaturou, technologickými příručkami a muzejními či galerijními sbírkami. Neopominutelným předpokladem pro práci s tímto typem textilního výrobku byla nutnost načerpání znalosti krajkářské technologie. Přesvědčili jsme se sami, že bez této výbavy by nebylo možné pochopit vývoj krajky a postřehnout proměny, k nimž dochází u krajek při přestupu ze slohového do lidového prostředí.

Abstract:

The submissed doctoral thesis is devoted to bobbin lace used on folk costume parts and home textiles in the past. Bobbin lace is considered a community, social and economic phenomenon which influenced the life of many inhabitants in our villages, and at the same time stood in the focus of the state authorities. The dissertation presents the lacemaking technique and the typology of bobbin lace in compliance with the latest knowledge. The following part of this thesis deals with the history of lace products, which is based on historic facts, as well as the evidence of eyewitnesses, female and male lacemakers, whose whole lives, or at least their parts, were connected with this craft. Even if lace is a beautiful and noble example of textile craft, it did not bring much joy to its authors. Lacemaking was connected with many hours´ sedentary work at the bobbin-lace pillow. The reward was low wages, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries. Involving almost all the family, namely the wife, children and the husband, in bobbin lacemaking or preparatory work, was a necessity. Children did not know what it meant to have a free time which could be spent with carefree playing. Besides school attendance they had to find time for bobbin lacemaking and household chores or help with fieldwork. Bobbin lacemaking, however, was not a very lucrative job; yet people used to resort to it. It was so in areas where poverty and lack of possibility of some other earnings did not allow to find a better source of income to secure the family needs. The next theme to which this dissertation was dedicated was the lace trade. Lace was the product wandering to their user often for long distances. It was distributed and peddled by manufacturers, factors, big businessmen, and also by hawkers and pedlars. These people spent a great part of the year on business trips, and not only did they incur the danger of possible mugging, but they bore the burden of the business risk as well. It was them who estimated which goods were made where and dictated the prices for which lace was bought up. The routes of lace trade have not been possible to be retraced fully yet. In the submissed thesis the situations in Vamberk and Zamberk regions are focused on. There are exemplified not only the names of local traders, but also of foreign ones who came regularly or irregularly there from Krusnohori region or from Slovakia. It is not possible, however, to answer the question whether these people bought up the lace or delivered it there. There has remained no evidence for this. The submissed doctoral thesis enables the view of bobbin lace used for decorating folk textiles in the most parts of our country. Due to the fact that lace was traded for great distances, it is not always possible to identify from where the particular lace came. The identification is made more difficult by the fact that a number of types of bobbin lace was made in several places paralelly; not only in Bohemian and Moravian regions, but also e.g. in Slovakia. During the 19th century the aesthetic value of folk textiles trimmed with lace and embroidery deteriorated. It was caused by several factors. On the one hand lace was becoming more available, on the other hand new simpler textile techniques used to appear from the middle of the 19 century („tenerifa“, crochetted lace); and embroidery threads delivered on market in new shades produced chemically enjoyed great popularity. In museum collections there are preserved many insensitive combinations of folk textiles originated exactly in those days. Bobbin lace was substituted permanently or temporarily by other products, most often by machine-made or crochetted lace, tulle with embroidery or without; or bobbin lace was used on garments and textiles where it had not been applied before. century the artists tried to involve rustical lace motifs in decoration of home textiles and accessories as well.Those products were of rather high quality. The following development of fashion, however, led in a different direction. Lace withdrew from clothes and hoseholds, and together with it the number of lace-makers diminished. Bobbin lace, however, has never disappeared from folk environment. It flourished somewhere, its usage changed into the role of interior textiles (pictures, decorative cloths) somewhere else. If we look back, we can see the richness of types and kinds of lace decorations which were used in the folk environment in this country in the past. Taking into account the dynamics of the development of lace decorations, we can assume that it is possible to set several development stages connected with lace. These stages reflect the relationship of the user and the producer to lace. They further express the mutual relationship between base and lace, embroidery, or other trimming of the textiles. And lastly, they correspond with the demands for garment trimming and social value of lace in the given period.
