Motivation of female readers of slash fiction

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce byla odpověď na otázku, jaká je motivace čtenářek slashové fikce. Slash je jedním z druhů fan fikce a jeho podstatou je spojování existujících mužských postav do vzájemných intimních vztahů. Většina autorek i čtenářek slashe jsou heterosexuální ženy. V teoretické části práce je charakterizován žánr slash fikce, zdůrazněna jeho interdisciplinární povaha a popsány související jevy, které mohou na ženy působit motivačně. Empirická část prezentuje výsledky kvalitativního výzkumu. Data byla získána pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s pěti ženami a následně analyzována interpretativní fenomenologickou analýzou. V průběhu analýzy vznikla nadřazená témata související s motivací k četbě slashe. Mezi motivy, které korespondují s dosavadními výzkumy, patří odlišnost slashe z hlediska zápletek, faktor mužské atraktivity a sexuálního vzrušení a odstranění ženského elementu z příběhu. Vyvstala také nová témata, a to oproštění se od vlastních zkušeností, tvorba ideálního páru, pocit otevřenosti, osobní odlišnost, vyrovnávání se s pohrdáním a schopnost tolerovat partnerovo sledování pornografie. V diskuzi jsou navrhovány další možnosti výzkumu slashe, kterému zatím v českém prostředí není věnována dostatečná pozornost.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis was to explore women´s motivation for reading slash fiction. Slash is a kind of a fan fiction that is based on picking the existing male characters from movies, TV shows or books, and connecting them into mutual intimate relationships. Most of the writers and readers of slash fiction are heterosexual women. In the theoretical part of the thesis, slash fiction genre and its cross-disciplinary nature are described, along with related phenomena, which might give women reason for reading slash. Empirical part presents the results of a qualitative research. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five women and subsequently analyzed with using the interpretative phenomenological analysis. There emerged super-ordinate themes related to motivation. Some of them correspond with existing foreign studies, such as difference of slash fiction plot-wise, men attraction and sexual arousal factor and elimination of women characters in stories. The following new themes were also revealed: freeing from one´s own experience, creation of ideal pairing, feeling of free-heartedness, personal difference, coping with other people´s disdain or ability to accept partner´s porn watching. In the discussion section there are suggested other possible slash researches in order to attract more attention to this underestimated topic.
