Intercultural communication: politeness in the Czech and British parliamentary discourse

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with the analysis and comparison of expressing politeness, or more precisely with the violation of politeness principles, in the Czech and British parliamentary discourse, particularly in the selected parliamentary question times designated for the prime minister. The theoretical part of the thesis includes the definition of political discourse and critical discourse analysis, it describes politeness theories, focusing especially on the one proposed by Brown and Levinson which provides the theoretical framework applied in the analysis, and it also presents the selected corpora. The practical part analyses and comments on the performance of face threatening acts and the politeness strategies used to mitigate these acts, and compares their use in both parliaments.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou a porovnáním vyjadřování zdvořilosti, respektive porušováním principů zdvořilosti, v českém a britském parlamentním diskurzu, konkrétně ve vybraných interpelacích poslanců na předsedu vlády. Teoretická část práce je věnována definici politického diskurzu a kritické analýzy diskurzu, zdvořilostním teoriím s důrazem na zdvořilostní model Brownové a Levinsona, ze kterého analýza primárně vychází, a v neposlední řadě popisu analyzovaného korpusu. Praktická část analyzuje a komentuje použití tzv. aktů ohrožujících tvář (face threatening acts) a zdvořilostních strategií používaných ke zmírnění dopadu těchto aktů, a porovnává jejich použití v obou parlamentech.
