The relations between the quality of child-parent relationship and the quality of romantic relationships of adults from the perspective of attachment theory

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem diplomové práce bylo prozkoumat souvislosti mezi povahou vztahu s rodiči v dětství, kvalitou romantické citové vazby a dalšími aspekty prožívání partnerských vztahů jako je strach z intimity a romantická osamělost. V rámci práce nás zajímaly také vztahy mezi citovou vazbou v dospělosti, strachem z intimity a emocionální osamělostí. V teoretické části je pojednáno o problematice citové vazby v dětství a v dospělosti, věnujeme se otázkám kontinuity citové vazby, její konceptualizace a měření, a také souvislostem mezi citovou vazbou a strachem z intimity a citovou vazbou a osamělostí. Praktická část je kvantitativně zaměřena. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 298 respondentů (224 žen a 74 mužů). Použity byly metody Parental Bonding Instrument pro hodnocení vztahu s rodiči, Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised pro posouzení romantické citové vazby v dospělosti, Fear of Intimacy Scale pro měření strachu z intimity a Short Version of Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults pro zjišťování míry osamělosti. Některé naše výsledky podpořily předpoklad, že povaha vztahu s rodiči v dětství ovlivňuje prožívání partnerských vztahů v dospělosti. Ukázalo se, že významnější roli v rámci vlivu na prožívání partnerských vztahů hraje u respondentů spíše vztah s matkou než vztah s otcem a výsledky potvrdily, že respondenti s optimálním vztahem k matce také častěji vykazují jistou citovou vazbu v partnerském vztahu. Co se týče strachu z intimity, romantické a emocionální osamělosti, tak v některých případech výsledky zcela nediferencovaly mezi osobami s optimálním vztahem k rodičům a ostatními skupinami, což je hlavní důvod, proč se plně nepotvrdily naše předpoklady. Naše výsledky dále potvrzují, že jistá citová vazba v dospělosti je spjata s nižší mírou emocionální osamělosti. V případě strachu z intimity výsledky opět zcela nediferencovaly mezi jistou citovou vazbou a ostatními typy tak, jak jsme předpokládali. Výsledky jsou diskutovány v kontextu teoretických předpokladů a empirických zjištění týkajících se dané problematiky.

Abstract:

The main aim of this diploma thesis was to explore the relations between the nature of child-parent relationship, the quality of romantic attachment in adults, and other aspects of romantic relationships such as fear of intimacy or romantic loneliness. The thesis is also concerned with the relations between adult attachment, fear of intimacy, and emotional loneliness. The theoretical part treats the issue of child and adult attachment; questions concerning the continuity of attachment, its conceptualisation and measuring; as well as the relations between attachment and fear of intimacy and between attachment and loneliness. The practical part is focused quantitatively. The research sample consisted of 298 respondents (224 women and 74 men). Various methods were used: Parental Bonding Instrument for evaluation of child-parent relationship, Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised for examination of romantic attachment in adults, Fear of Intimacy Scale for measuring of fear of intimacy, and Short Version of Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults for measuring of loneliness. Some of the results supported the presumption that the nature of child-parent relationship influences the quality of romantic relationships of adults. It came to light that the child-mother relationship is more influential in this aspect than the child-father relationship and the results confirmed that the respondents with optimal motherly parenting are more likely to show secure attachment in their romantic relationships. As far as fear of intimacy, romantic and emotional loneliness are concerned, the results have not always really differentiated between those with optimal parenting and the others, which is the main reason why the original presumptions were not entirely confirmed. The results also confirm that secure attachment in adults is adherent to a lower rate of emotional loneliness. In the case of fear of intimacy, the results have once more not differentiated between secure attachment and other types entirely as was presumed. The results are discussed in context of theoretical and empirical findings in the given field.
