Assistive technology for the elderly - an example of good practice

Abstract:

Předložená bakalářská práce je věnována asistivním technologiím, konkrétně systému eHelper, který mnohé z těchto technologií využívá. Za účelem zjištění, jak daný systém funguje v praxi, byl pod záštitou vývojového týmu eHelper vyvinut kvantitativní výzkum s následnou analýzou dat a doporučením. Obecným cílem asistivních technologií je usnadnit, zkvalitnit a celkově zlepšit péči o jejich uživatele, zejména pak seniory. Asistivní technologie může využívat buď sám senior, nebo pečující osoby. V teoretické části práce jsou vysvětleny základní pojmy související s asistivními technologiemi, jsou zde shrnuty příklady různých typů technologií a jejich funkce. V neposlední řadě se teoretická část této práce zaměřuje na sociální služby využívající asistivní technologie a to jak v České republice, tak v Rakousku. Jako příklad dobré praxe v empirické části této práce byl vybrán systém eHelper. Tento systém byl zvolen z hlediska jeho snadné dostupnosti a komplexnosti v oblasti využívaných asistivních technologií. Empirická část je zpracována formou kvantitativního výzkumu metodou dotazníku s cílem zjistit míru spokojenosti respondentů s užíváním systému eHelper v domácnostech pečujících a také zjistit jeho celkovou funkčnost v praxi. Pro tvorbu výzkumu byly zvoleny čtyři hlavní výzkumné otázky a dvě vedlejší, se kterými bylo v empirické části práce pracováno. Z výsledků empirické části této práce vyplynulo, že nejčastějším důvodem koupě systému eHelper je zajištění bezpečnosti uživatele z pohledu pečujících. Systém eHelper nabízí pečujícím více výhod, než nevýhod, které jsou však do budoucna řešitelné. Většina pečujících je se systémem spokojená a mají pouze malé množství připomínek k jeho funkčnosti. Všechna data z kvantitativního výzkumu budou k dispozici týmu vývojářů eHelperu a výsledek empirické části bude moci posloužit k inovaci daného sytému.

Abstract:

The presented bachelor thesis is dedicated to assistive technologies, specifically the eHelper system, which utilizes many of these technologies. In order to find out how the system functions in practice, a quantitative research was developed with permission by the eHelper development team, followed by data analysis and recommendations. The general objective of assistive technologies is to simplify, enhance, and overall improve the care of technology users, especially elderly people. Assistive technology can be used either by the elderly people themselves or by their caregivers. In the theoretical part of the thesis, there are explained basic concepts related to assistive technologies, and there are summarized examples of various types of technologies and their functions. On the other hand, the theoretical part of this thesis focuses on social services using assistive technologies, both in the Czech Republic and in Austria. As an example of best practice in the empirical part of this thesis, the eHelper system was chosen. This system was selected for its easy availability and complexity in the area of utilized assistive technologies. The empirical part is processed by quantitative research method using a questionnaire. It serves to determine the satisfaction level of respondents using the eHelper system in caregiver households. Also, the survey serves to find out the overall functionality of the system. Four main research questions and two secondary ones were chosen for the empirical part of the thesis. From the results of the empirical part of this thesis, it was shown that the most common reason for purchasing the eHelper system is to ensure the user's safety from the caregivers' perspective. The eHelper system offers more advantages than disadvantages for caregivers, but the disadvantages can be solved in the future. Most caregivers are satisfied with the system and they have only a few comments about its functionality. All data from the quantitative research will be available to the eHelper development team, and the result of the empirical part can be used to innovate the system further.
