"Where Do You Come From, Dear?" Attitudes to Colour in the Novels of Andrea Levy

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá dílo Andrey Levy, přesněji romány Small Island, Every Light in the House Burnin’, Never Far from Nowhere, a Fruit of the Lemon, a přistupuje k nim jako k sociálnímu dokumentu, který zachycuje sociokulturní vývoj britské společnosti v druhé polovině dvacátého století, zejména co se rasy, barvy pleti a imigrace týče. V práci je diskutován vývoj postoje k migrantům jamajského původu a prostřednictvím tohoto jevu je zkoumán i vývoj tří základních přístupů k barvě pleti v (britské) společnosti – rasismu, kolorismu, a přecitlivělosti na barvu pleti. Závěr práce poté nastiňuje vývoj těchto postojů v novém tisíciletí a navrhuje směry, kterými by se mohl vydat další výzkum v této oblasti.

Abstract:

This thesis proposes to study the work of Andrea Levy, more specifically the novels Small Island, Every Light in the House Burnin’, Never Far from Nowhere, and Fruit of the Lemon, and approaches them as a social commentary that captures British cultural history of the latter half of the twentieth century in terms of race, colour and immigration. The development of the attitudes towards the Jamaican-British migrants is discussed, and through that, the development of three attitudes to colour – racism, colourism, and colour-consciousness is examined. The thesis concludes with a brief outline of the continuation of these tendencies into the new millennium and with suggestions for further study.
