Seniors in the socially excluded localities: Descendats of Gypsies

Abstract:

Ve své práci se zabývám romskými seniory žijícími v sociálně vyloučených lokalitách. Jde o osoby, které přišly po druhé světové válce do Čech nebo o první generaci zde narozenou. Jejich zkušenost odráží náročnou integraci do české společnosti, snahu komunistů o jejich asimilaci, rozsáhlé strukturální změny na počátku 90.let minulého století a konečně také život v sociálně vyloučených lokalitách. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí. Při analýze výpovědí romských seniorů žijících v sociálně vyloučených lokalitách se snažím propojit koncepty odkazující k sociálnímu vyloučení i k romské kultuře. Ty jsou představeny v první části mé práce. Svůj text opírám především o vlastní terénní výzkum mezi romskými seniory žijícími v sociálně vyloučených lokalitách. Zajímám se především o to, jak na ně život v ghettu doléhá, jaký způsobem se mu přizpůsobili, případně jak úspěšně. Pokouším se také odpovědět, co z romské kultury v jejich životech zůstalo nebo v jakých rysech se profilují jako příslušníci dělnické třídy, příp. členové majority.

Abstract:

My diploma paper deals with the Roma seniors living in the socially excluded localities. It is devided into the two sections. The first part is the theoretical one and it is meant as the background for my field work presented in the second part of the study. The research question of this study is: How do the Roma culture, culture of the majority and the culture of poverty influence the behaviour and values of my respondents. The theoretical part tries to define Roma by the means of Roma culture and deals with some special features of the contemporary research on this very special minority group. The concepts of social exclusion and culture of poverty is discussed closely as well. The second part is based on the analysis of the field data collected in the three socially excluded localities where several seniors were interviewed. These are Roma people who came into the Czech after the world war II. or the second generation already born here. The main topics of the interviews are: means of integration in the post-war period, some features of the Roma culture, attitudes towards the younger generations and the way of life in these localities. People under the question are not Roma in the strong sense, because they do not share the traditional Roma culture although ?Gypsiness? is their expressed self-identity. The seniors are socially excluded neither because their living strategies are entirely different from the culture of poverty model. Their are not even members of the majority because they will be never seen as the members. The external charakteristics are the source of this barier. The strong family ties help them to cope with the situation in these localities. It can be concluded their identity dynamically changes in the dependence on the staindpoint of the view.
