Light and Lightness in Virginia Woolf's Novels

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce se soustředí na analýzu tří románových děl Virginie Woolfové: Jákobův pokoj, Paní Dallowayová a Orlando. Analýza se zaměřuje na dva hlavní rysy, které se ve všech těchto dílech objevují, a to na světlo a lehkost. Jsou v ní popsány různé druhy světla a lehkosti a rovněž je učiněn pokus o vymezení jejich funkcí. Woolfová používá světlo a lehký styl k tomu, aby vytvořila velice specifické pozadí pro přenos obrazů, atmosféry okamžiku či atmosféry historického období. V úvodu je sledováno světlo a lehkost na pozadí moderny. Jako metafora pro lehkost a světlo v tomto období slouží přehodnocení vědy a dehumanizace v umění. Podobně je tomu v literatuře: volnost moderního románu stojí v opozici proti románu doby viktoriánské. Následuje detailní analýza jednotlivých románů. V závěru následuje srovnání tří analyzovaných děl. Jsou zde vyčteny užité druhy světla a lehkosti a uvažuje se na jejich dopadem.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis analyses two phenomena, light and lightness, in three works by Virginia Woolf: Jacob's Room, Mrs. Dalloway and Orlando: A Biography. Different kinds of light and lightness are described and there is an attempt to specify their functions. Woolf, with the help of light and lightness creates a peculiar background for the transmission of images, atmosphere or a mood of an age. In the beginning, light and lightness are observed in the background of Modernism. The re-evaluation of science and dehumanization of art are seen as metaphors for the light and lightness of that era. Similarly, in literature, the freedom of the Modernist novel lies in opposition to the Victorian novel. Than a close-reading analysis of the three works follows. At the end, the three novels are compared, and the impact of the use of light and lightness is discussed.
