An annotated translation of a previously untranslated non-literary English text into Czech and text analysis

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá překladem a překladovým procesem anglického dosud nepřeloženého populárně-naučného textu do českého jazyka. Cílem práce je přeložit dvě kapitoly o architektuře z knihy Elizabethan Architecture: its rise and fall, 1540-1640 a okomentovat strategie a postupy, které byly během překladu použity. Práce obsahuje analýzu vnětextových a vnitrotextových faktorů podle modelu Christiany Nord a prezentován je i skopos překladu. Překlad je proveden tak, aby respektoval skopos cílového textu a v závěru práce jsou okomentovány konkrétní změny a použití překladatelských postupů.

Abstract:

This master's thesis deals with the translation process from English to Czech language of a popular science text that has not yet been translated. The aim of this thesis is to translate two chapters on architecture from the book Elizabethan Architecture: its rise and fall, 1540-1640 and to comment on the strategies and procedures used during the translation process. In addition to the analysis examining the intratextual and extratextual factors according to model of Christiana Nord, the skopos is also presented. As observed findings indicate, the translated text is then modified with respect to the target medium. Translation procedures and the use of translation strategies are mentioned at the end of the thesis.
