The self-presentation of Instagram influencers and the construction of social media celebrity

Abstract:

Cílem této disertační práce je určit, jak je identita celebrity sociálních médií konstruová na v diskurzu. Pro dosažení tohoto cíle se studie zaměřuje na sebe-prezentaci konkrétní skupiny influencerů na sociálních sítích a analyzuje jejich Instagramové příspěvky. Pomocí digitální diskurzivní analýzy jsou prozkoumány nejen způsoby vizuální a lingvistické sebeprezentace a vyprávění příběhů, ale také i řečové a vizuální jednání influencerů online. Analýza těchto aspektů sebeprezentace dokazuje, že v Instagramových příspěvcích influencerů dominují strategie, pomocí kterých budují především svou odbornost (competence), autenticitu (authenticity), sympatičnost (likeability) a schopnost ztotožnit se s druhým (relatability). Tímto způsobem studie dokázala identifikovat konkrétní prostředky a strategie, které uživatelé sociálních sítí využívají pro účely budování a udržování identity celebrity sociálních médií.

Abstract:

The aim of this dissertation is to examine in what ways the identity of social media celebrity is constructed in discourse. To achieve that, the study focuses on the self-presentation of a particular group of social media influencers and analyses their Instagram microposts. Through the lens of digital discourse analysis, it investigates the influencers’ visual and linguistic self-presentation practices, storytelling practices as well as the image acts and speech acts the influencers perform in their self-presentation online. The analysis of these aspects of self-presentation demonstrates that the strategies which construct competence, relatability, authenticity and likeability predominate in the influencers’ Instagram microposts. In this way, the present study achieves to identify concrete resources and strategies employed by social media users for the purposes of constructing and performing the identity of social media celebrity.
