Convergence or divergence? (analysis of eurozone countries)

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce „Konvergence nebo divergence? (analýza vývoje v zemích platících eurem)“ je zhodnotit, zda členské země eurozóny mají tendenci vůči sobě konvergovat nebo divergovat. Na základě literární rešerše odborných článků M. Levitta, Ch. Lorda, M. Feildsteina, G. McCrona a dalších byl prezentován očekávaný vývoj a přínos měnové unie. Na základě analýzy hospodářského vývoje zemí eurozóny v letech 2000 až 2011, byly potvrzeny odlišnosti v očekávaném a skutečném vývoji makroekonomických ukazatelů. Odlišnosti vyskytující se mezi zeměmi eurozóny a jejich prohloubení v návaznosti na vypuknutí hospodářské krize byly potvrzeny výpočty směrodatné odchylky. Nejsilnější divergence byla prokázána v obchodní bilanci, HDP na obyvatele a míře nezaměstnanosti. Nejslabší divergenční tendence vykazovaly země eurozóny v úrokových sazbách a míře inflace. Konvergence eurozóny jako celku nebyla potvrzena.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis called "Convergence or divergence? (analysis of Eurozone countries)"is to assess whether the Eurozone countries tend to converge or diverge. On the basis of a literature review of expert’s articles of M. Levitt, C.Lord, M. Feildstein,G. McCrone and others, the expected development and the benefit of monetary union were presented. Due to the analysis of the economic development in the Eurozone countries in the period of 2000-2011, contrasts in expected and actual macroeconomic indicators were confirmed. The differences among the Eurozone countries and their deepening, as a follow-up to the commencement of the economic crisis, were substantiated by calculating the standard deviation. The strongest divergence has been ascertained in the trade balance, GDP per capita and unemployment rate. On the other hand, the weakest divergence tendency was proved in interest rates and inflation rate. Convergence of the Eurozone as a whole has not been verified.
