A Theme Frame in TEFL: Books and Audiobooks

Abstract:

Cílem této studie je popsat a prokázat výhody práce s tematickým rámcem ve výuce angličtiny. Tematický rámec je specifický způsob motivace převzatý z prostředí dobrovolnických organizací, který si klade za cíl zlepšit vztah studentů k vyučovanému jazyku i jejich jazykové dovednosti tím, že výuce dodá atraktivní formu. Toho docílí propojením všech součástí výuky s ústředním tématem vytvořeným na základě knih nebo filmů, které studenty baví. Ti pak vidí v práci větší smysl, dokáží se lépe soustředit a vědomosti získané během těchto aktivit tak mají mnohem trvalejší charakter. Práce dále uvádí argumenty, proč kombinace knih a audioknih představuje ideální základ pro vytvoření tematického rámce za účelem výuky anglického jazyka a popisuje kritéria pro vytvoření efektivního rámce a jeho začlenění do učebního plánu. Účinnost této metody je testována v případové studii, která je součástí práce.

Abstract:

The objective of this thesis is to analyse and demonstrate the benefits of using a theme frame for the purposes of teaching English as a foreign language. A theme frame is a specific motivational strategy frequently used by volunteer organisations. It strives to improve students' attitude towards English, as well as increase their language competence, by providing lessons with an attractive form, which is achieved through linking all of the class activities to a common theme based on books or films that students find enjoyable. Students are thus more likely to pay attention and actively participate in the lessons, making the knowledge gained in theme lessons more permanent. The thesis also presents arguments as to why the combined use of books and audiobooks makes an ideal base for creating a theme frame for language teaching purposes, and provides guidelines for designing an effective theme frame, including its integration into the school syllabus. The final part of the theiss consists of a case study analysing the results of an experimental theme frame course which was carried out in order to prove the effectiveness of this method.
