The use of the mother tongue in English language lessons for grammar school students

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na používání mateřského jazyka ve výuce anglického jazyka na gymnáziu, přičemž byly zkoumány nejběžnější situace jeho používání. Práce má za cíl zjistit, jak při výuce zapojují mateřský jazyk učitelé a jak studenti nižší i pokročilé úrovně znalosti anglického jazyka. Teoretická část se zabývá především výhodami a nevýhodami používání mateřského jazyka, jakož i poměrem jeho užití ve srovnání s anglickým jazykem. Dále analyzuje a porovnává různé vyučovací metody a jejich vliv na používání mateřského jazyka ve výuce cizích jazyků. V neposlední řadě se práce zabývá přístupy učitelů i potřebami žáků a tím, jak se začleňování mateřského jazyka projevuje v efektivitě výuky angličtiny. Hlavním cílem praktické části je prozkoumat současný stav používání mateřského jazyka, především s ohledem na zkušenosti, postoje a potřeby studentů gymnázia. Nakonec jsou diskutovány přínosy pro výuku, které jsou výsledkem šetření. Práce dále obsahuje návrhy ke zlepšení situace v používání mateřského jazyka při výuce angličtiny.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to discover the purposes of the use of the mother tongue in teaching English to grammar school students, to identify the most common situations of its use, and to find out to what extent the first language is used by teachers and students at both the lower and advanced levels. The theoretical part primarily deals with the benefits and drawbacks of the use of the mother tongue as well as its proportion in comparison to the target language. It also analyses different teaching methods and their influence on the use of the mother tongue in foreign language teaching. Last but not least, the paper examines both teachers and learners´ beliefs and principles reflecting the effectiveness of the lessons with focus on the incorporation of the mother tongue. The main objective of the practical section is to investigate the current situation regarding the use of Czech, primarily focusing on experience, attitudes and needs of the grammar school students. Finally, implications for teaching which result from the research are discussed. Furthermore, the paper provides suggestions leading to improving the situation concerning the use of Czech in English learning and teaching.
