Rozvoj v oblasti informačných systémov a enterprise aplikácií viedol k návrhu čoraz zložitejších aplikácií tvorených značným množstvom programového kódu. Aplikácie tvorené veľkým množstvom programového kódu sú obvykle náročnejšie na udržovanie a potenciálne sa v nich vyskytuje viac chýb.
