Impact of Parents‘ Negative Emotions on Children with ASD

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje tématu vlivu negativních emocí rodičů na děti s poruchami autistického spektra. Kladla si za cíl porozumět tomu, jak rodiče dětí s PAS vnímají reakce svých dětí na své negativní emoce a jak následně s touto reakcí u dětí pracují. Chtěli jsme zjistit, zda rodiče pozorují u svých dětí sdílení afektu. Zdrojem dat pro získání výsledků bylo sedm rozhovorů s primárními pečujícími osobami dětí. Rozhovory byly následně analyzovány pomocí metody IPA. Analýza rozhovorů ukázala, že děti reagovaly na negativní emoce svých rodičů utěšením, nespokojeností s emocí, stejnou emocí u sebe, doptáváním nebo měly emoce negativní vliv na dítě. Část analýzy na sdílení afektu přinesla témata citlivost na emoce, sdílení emocí a zrcadlení emocí. V rámci zpracování reakcí dětí vyvstalo sedm témat, kdy nejpoužívanějšími strategiemi rodičů byly vysvětlování, snaha neprojevovat emoce před dítětem a odchod na klidné místo. Výsledky práce mohou být přínosné pro odborníky pracujícími s dětmi s PAS a mohou být podnětem pro další výzkumy.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the topic of impact of parents’ negative emotions on children with autism spectrum disorder. We aimed to reach the understanding of parents’ perception of children’s reactions to parents’ negative emotions and subsequently, how parents deal with such reaction. We would like to explore whether parents perceive affect sharing in their children. Data source to obtain results were seven interviews with primary caregivers of the children. The interviews were analysed with IPA method. The analysis showed that children reacted to their parents’ negative emotions with comforting, discontent with the emotion, same emotional state, questioning or the emotions had negative impact on children. The part of the analysis focused on affect sharing brought themes such as sensitivity to emotions, emotion sharing and mirroring emotions. In terms of dealing with children’s reactions, seven themes came up. The most occurring parents’ strategies were explaining, effort not to express emotions with children present and finding calm place. The results of the thesis could be an inspiration to professionals who work with children with ASD and they could serve as a basis for future research.
