Motivation and Its Role in Learning Foreign Languages

Abstract:

The following thesis consists of four chapters. Taking the bottom-up approach, each chapter will analyse the issue of motivation at various levels of complexity: The first chapter will elaborate upon two psychological processes that have a decisive impact on a learner?s motivation and that are very common in school life. These processes are called: attribution, self-efficacy and the arousal theory of performance The second chapter will be devoted to transactional analysis. This is a set of communication strategies, the knowledge of which can allow the teacher to avoid communication patterns that may discourage students. The third chapter will present various theories of motivation that are either parts of theories of personality or standalone constructs. Four approaches will be discussed and elaborated upon: the Freudian model of personality, the hierarchy of needs developed by A. Maslow, Self-Determination Theory by Ryan & Deci and motivational orientations theory according to Gardner & Lambert. The fourth chapter will deal with the most intricate aspect of the topic, namely how motivation ?works? in the lives of individuals and how (or whether) it relates to foreign language learning. this chapter will be based on the outcome of a survey-based explorative research project of the topic.

Tato diplomová práce,sestávající ze čtyř kapitol, představí analýzu problematiky motivace z různýchúhlů pohledu. První kapitola detailně popisuje dva psychologické procesy, kterémají rozhodující vliv na motivaci žáků, a to vnímanou osobní účinnost a aktivačníteorii výkonnosti. Druhá kapitola se věnuje transakční analýze, což je soubor komunikačníchstrategií, jejichž znalost umožňuje učiteli vyhnout se takovým komunikačnímvzorcům, které by vedly k demotivaci žáků. Třetí kapitola probírá různéteorie motivace, které jsou buď součástí teorie osobnosti nebo samostatnýmikoncepty: Freudovský model osobnosti, Maslowova hierarchie potřeb, teorie sebeurčení Ryana a Deciho a teoriemotivačního zaměření podle Gardnera a Lamberta. Čtvrtá kapitola Se zabývánejsložitějším aspektem motivace, a to, jak motivace ?funguje? v životě jednotlivcůa jak (nebo zda) se vztahuje na učení cizím azykům. Tato kapitolu je založenana výsledcích dotazníkového šetření.
