The Student's Willingness to Communicate in English Teaching at a University

Abstract:

Předkládaná disertační práce se zabývá ochotou studentů komunikovat ve výuce anglického jazyka na vysoké škole. Ochota studentů komunikovat ve výuce je konstrukt, který měří ochotu studentů podílet se na výukové komunikaci prostřednictvím čtyř řečových dovedností (čtení, psaní, poslech a mluvení). Cílem práce bylo popsat míru ochoty studentů komunikovat ve výuce anglického jazyka a faktory, které mohou ochotu studentů ovlivnit, tj. obavou studentů z komunikace ve výuce anglického jazyka a motivy studentů pro komunikaci s učitelem. Obava z komunikace ve výuce cizího jazyka je koncept, který tvoří tři složky, tj. komunikační ostýchavost, zkoušková úzkost a strach z negativního hodnocení. Dalším cílem bylo získat data o tom, jaké motivy studenty vedou k zapojení se do komunikace ve výuce. Výzkum byl veden na základě metodologie smíšeného designu. Kvalitativní část výzkumu zahrnovala použití demografického dotazníku, škály Ochota studentů komunikovat ve výuce anglického jazyka, Obava z komunikace ve výuce anglického jazyka a Motivy studenta pro komunikaci s učitelem. Polostrukturované rozhovory s vybranými studenty byly vedeny s cílem doplnit dotazníkové šetření a získat podrobnější informace o motivech studentů pro komunikaci ve výuce. Z analýzy dat vyplývají tři klíčová zjištění. Studenti vyjádřili, že jsou ochotni komunikovat ve výuce v anglickém jazyce a mezi jednotlivými řečovými dovednostmi nebyl nalezen výrazný rozdíl. Více než dvě třetiny studentů reportovalo střední a vysokou míru obavy z komunikace v anglickém jazyce ve třídě. Nejvyšší míru obavy deklarovali studenti v situacích při verbálních projevech během výuky a pokud srovnávali úroveň své komunikační kompetence se spolužáky. Nejdůležitějším motivem studentů pro komunikaci ve výuce s učitelem byla potřeba získat informaci či radu týkající se obsahu výuky nebo učiva. Z analýzy rozhovorů vzešly motivy studentů pro komunikaci ve výuce, tj. komunikuji, protože mě to baví; protože chci ukázat, že umím; protože se chci zlepšit; protože chci pomoci a protože musím. Jelikož byl výzkum veden na základě informací poskytnutých od studentů, můžeme hovořit pouze o motivech, které deklarovali studenti. Cílem dalšího výzkumného šetření by mělo být porovnání deklarované ochoty studentů s pozorováním ve výuce.

Abstract:

The presented dissertation deals with the willingness of students to communicate in the teaching of the English language at a university. Students' willingness to communicate in teaching is a construct that measures students' willingness to participate in communication in teaching through four language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). The aim of the thesis was to describe the level of students' willingness to communicate in English language teaching and the factors that can affect students' willingness i.e., foreign language classroom anxiety and students' motives for communicating with the teacher. Foreign language classroom anxiety is a concept that consists of three components i.e., communication apprehension, test anxiety and the fear of negative evaluation. Another goal was to obtain data on what motives lead students to engage in communication in class. The research was conducted based on a mixed methods design. The qualitative part of the research included the use of a demographic questionnaire, the scale Students' Willingness to Communicate in English Language Teaching, Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety, and Students´ Motives for Communicating with a teacher. Semi-structured interviews with selected students were conducted with the aim of supplementing the questionnaire survey and obtaining more detailed information about students' motives for communication in teaching. Three key findings emerge from the data analysis. Students expressed that they were willing to communicate in English language classes and no significant difference was found between speaking skills. More than two-thirds of students reported moderate to high levels of foreign language classroom anxiety in English in the classroom. Finally, students declared the highest level of concern in situations involving verbal expressions during lessons and when comparing their level of communication competence with their classmates. The most important motivation of the students for communicating with the teacher in the lesson was the need to get information or advice regarding the content of the lesson or the subject matter. From the analysis of the interviews, the students' motives for communication in teaching emerged, i.e. I communicate because I enjoy it; because I want to show that I have the skills; because I want to improve; because I want to help and lastly because I must. As the research was conducted on the basis of information provided by the students, we can only talk about the declared motives. The aim of further research should be to compare the declared willingness of students with observations in teaching.
