Pro pluripotenci a udržení kmenovosti je nezbytné specifické nastavení mitochondriálních funkcí. Recentní studie dokládají, že mitochondrie mají významnou úlohu také ve fyziologii nádorových kmenových buněk (CSCs, cancer stem cells) a jsou slibným cílem pro vývoj terapie účinné proti CSCs. A specific state of mitochondrial functions is essential for pluripotency and stemness maintenance.
