Political art: One concept too many?

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá možností konceptualizace fenoménu politického umění. V souvislosti s tím si klade dvě základní otázky, a sice Co dělá politické umění politickým? A zdali si politické umění může ponechat svou uměleckou hodnotu. V závislosti na tom jsou zde potom identifikovány hlavní sporné linie vztahu umění a politiku. Zároveň jsou zde rozebrány hlavní roviny, skrze které můžeme politické umění uchopit. V druhé části práce jsou potom rozebrány konkrétní fenomény v rámci politického umění jako: umění totalitních režimů, politické kampaně, propaganda, politická satira a angažované a konceptuální umění.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the possibilities of conceptualisation of the phenomenon of political art. Addressing this, it asks two fundamental questions, namely: What makes political art political? Can political art retain its artistic value? Answering these questions, the most important contested lines between art and politics are delineated and the main layers at which political art can be perceived are analysed. In the latter part of the treatise, specific phenomenons within political art are examined. These include the art of totalitarian regimes, political campaigns, propaganda, political satire, committed and conceptual art.
