Participation in the social movement as an identity-enhancing experience

Abstract:

Kvalitativní studie se zaměřuje na zkušenost mladých lidí se zapojením do sociálního hnutí, s důrazem na utváření identity a zmocňující prožitky. Nejprve vymezuje pojem sociální hnutí a nastiňuje význam sociálně psychologického pohledu. Teoretické zakotvení popisuje význam zapojení v sociálních hnutích z několika perspektiv: teorie sociální identity v kontextech sociálních hnutí, utváření identity v přechodu do dospělosti, politické socializace a zmocňujících prožitků v sociálních hnutích. Prostřednictvím interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy byly zpracovány rozhovory se čtyřmi mladými lidmi, zapojenými do aktivit environmentálního hnutí „Limity jsme my“. Identifikováno bylo pět témat, která byla podle respondentů významná pro jejich zkušenost v sociálním hnutí: „Limity jsme my“ jako hnutí, s kterým se ztotožním; Osobní důležitost charakteristik hnutí; Posun v pozicích v hnutí; Význam osobních vazeb a Význam přímé zkušenosti. V diskuzi jsou tato témata vztažena k perspektivám nastíněným v úvodu, diskutováno je utváření identity a význam zmocňujících prožitků spojených s konsenzuálním rozhodováním, učením v rámci hnutí a situacemi kolektivní akce.

Abstract:

Qualitative study deals with the experience of participation in social movements among young people, with emphasis on identity formation and empowering experiences. Firstly, it defines social movements and outlines importance of social-psychological focus. The theoretical framework covers the significance of participation in social movements from several perspectives: social identity theory applied on contexts of social movements, formation of identity in transition to adulthood, political socialization and empowering experiences in social movements. The data were obtained from interviews with four young people, participating in environmental movement ‚We are the Limits‘. Based on the method of interpretative phenomenological analysis, five themes emerged: ‚We are the Limits‘ as the movement I identify with; Personal importance of movement‘s features; Shift in positions in the movement; The significance of personal bonds and The significance of direct experience. The themes are discussed according to the outlined perspectives, with further focus on identity formations and significance of empowering experiences related to consensual decision-making, learning processes in social movement and situations of collective action.
