Enjoying and singing for pleasure in gospel choir : interpretative phenomenologic analysis

Abstract:

Tato práce popisuje explorativní kvalitativní výzkum charakteristikou vícečetné případové studie s využitím metody interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy (IPA), který mapuje prožívání tří členů amatérského gospelového pěveckého sboru a to, jaký smysl a význam subjektivně přikládají svým zkušenostem z účasti v tomto pěveckém sboru. V teoretické části práce jsou představena epistemologická východiska práce -- tj. procesualismus, fenomenologie, hermeneutika a idiografie, a jsou definovány klíčové pojmy prožívání, zkušenost, životní svět a další. Dále je představeno věcné téma práce -- tj. prožívání hudebních a pěveckých aktivit, rozdíl mezi profesionálním a amatérským přístupem k umění a fenomenologie radosti v podání Csikszentmihályiho teorie stavu plynutí (flow). Výzkumná část popisuje postup získávání dat pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů i postup tvorby výsledků formou analýzy a interpretace dat dle metody IPA. Následně jsou představovány výsledky analýzy a interpretace dat každého jednotlivého respondenta samostatně (vícečetná případová studie) ve formě tzv. „hlavních témat“, která jsou vždy důsledně zakotvena v konkrétních hrubých datech přepisů rozhovorů. Je tak zhuštěným způsobem představen životní svět těchto členů pěveckého sboru. Závěr práce je věnován stručnému pokusu o nalezení společných a jedinečných témat u jednotlivých respondentů, a kritickou diskusi nad zjištěnými výsledky a jejími přínosy pro psychologii.

Abstract:

This thesis describes exploratory qualitative study with the characteristics of multiple case study, by using method of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), exploring the unique experience and lifeworld of three members of an amateur gospel choir during choir activities (rehearsals, concerts etc.) The theoretical section of the work presents epistemological viewpoint: processual approach to reality, phenomenology, hermeneutics and idiography; and key terms, e.g. lived experience, experience and lifeworld, are defined and resolved. Further, the subject topic is given appropriate background -- presenting theoretical and empirical data about experiencing musical and singing activities, experiential difference between professional and amateur art performance and the phenomenology of pleasure in terms of M. Csikszentmihalyi's FLOW concept. The empirical section describes the research using IPA itself. Firstly, the procedure of acquiring raw data using semi-structured interviews is presented, followed by describing the process of analysis and interpretation of transcripts of such interviews according to the IPA approach. Then the results of this work are presented for each case individually in the form of 'superordinate themes' which are rigorously grounded in the raw data using verbatim extracts of the interview transcripts. This way the lifeworld of the participants is interpreted and given sense by the researcher, who condenses the data into the form of themes and superordinate themes, which he describes and supports by adding adequate verbatim data. The conclusion briefly summarizes the results, attempts to find commonalities and differences across cases and finally discusses the results, used methodology and implication for further research.
