"Struggle for the town hall" of Vyškov in 1899

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na zmapování jedné z důležitých etap dějin města Vyškov, týkající se národnostního a z toho vycházejícího politického boje v obci, kterou představuje tzv. „boj o radnici“ města dovršený v roce 1899. Stručně seznamuje s historií a správními dějinami obce od počátku středověku po události 19. století. V hlavní části se nejdříve věnuje vysvětlení obecných pojmů, jako je občanská společnost, samospráva obcí po roce 1848 či česko-německé národnostní vztahy na Moravě, které následně konkretizuje na příkladu vývoje ve městě Vyškov. Dále sleduje již samotný průběh voleb do obecního zastupitelstva, počínajíc rokem 1850, přičemž je největší pozornost dána právě volbám probíhajícím v průběhu 90. let 19. století. Závěrem informuje o spolkové činnosti v obci, rozebírá fenomén čestného měšťanství (včetně výčtu členů ve Vyškově do vzniku ČSR) a seznamuje s významnými osobnostmi města působícími v politické sféře v průběhu 19. století.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on describing one of important historical periods of the town of Vyškov, namely the period of ethnic fights which ended up in a political clash in the town, the so-called "struggle for the town hall" completed in 1899. First of all, it introduces the readers into the general and administrative history of the town from the beginning of the Middle Ages till the events of the 19th century. The main part of the thesis deals, firstly, with explaining some basic terms, such as civil society, town municipality after 1848 or Czech-German ethnic relations in Moravia, which are, then, concretized on the example of the historical development in the town of Vyškov. Further attention is drawn to the local authority polls beginning with that of 1850 and putting a special emphasis on the municipal elections during the 1890s. The final part of the thesis informs about club activities in the town, it studies the phenomenon of the honorary citizenship (including a list of members in Vyškov until the establishment of the ČSR) and it presents some important personalities of the town engaged in the political sphere in the course of the 19th century.
