Development of Islamism and Post-Islamism in the Context of the So-Called Arab Spring Revolutions

Abstract:

Události revolucí tzv. Arabského jara se staly jednou z nejdiskutovanějších otázek mezinárodní politiky posledních tří let. Spolu s pozorností, kterou revolucím a porevolučnímu vývoji věnují akademici i média, se začal s nevídanou intenzitou skloňovat i termín islamismu. Zbytek světa, a zejména svět západní, se zdá být šokován neočekávaným porevolučním nárůstem moci skupin klasifikovaných jako islamistické. Navzdory snahám vysvětlit příčiny těchto úspěchů islamistů v porevolučních volbách a předpovědět možné budoucí politické směřování jimi spravovaných zemí si zjevně nikdo neklade otázku, kdo skutečně jsou tito "islamisté", kteří v porevolučních zemích získávají na moci. Předkládaná diplomová práce si klade za cíl tuto mezeru ve výzkumu problematiky překlenout, a to hned dvěma způsoby. První z nich spočívá v podrobném rozboru terminologického aparátu, a to zejména pojmu islamismus, který se snaží současně vymezit i od dalších více či méně blízkých ideologií, jakož i dalších termínů s islamismem často spojovaných. Ačkoli pro tyto pojmy neexistují žádné jednotné a všeobecně přijatelné definice, osvětlení způsobu jejich odborného používání je naprosto nezbytným předpokladem pro pochopení celé širší problematiky. Druhý způsob pak spočívá ve výzkumu proměn, kterými islamismus v souvislosti s revolucemi Arabského jara a v rámci porevolučního dění prochází. Jak předpokládá i teorie umírněnosti, ideologie (a islamismus v tomto není výjimkou) nejsou jen statickým konceptem. Ačkoli možným proměnám islamismu dnes není prakticky žádný prostor věnován, diplomová práce prokazuje, že revoluce Arabského jara tuto ideologii beze změny neponechaly. V souladu s tím je tedy žádoucí, aby se i další vývoj zaměřil více na skutečnou podstatu aktuálně proklamované ideologie islamismu spíše než jen na politické úspěchy jeho stoupenců.

Abstract:

Events of the so-called 'Arab Spring' revolutions have become one of the most discussed issues in international politics of the last three years. With both academic and media attention paid to the revolutions and post-revolutionary development of affected countries, use of the notion of Islamism has seen unprecedented growth. The rest of the world, notably the West, were shocked by the unexpected post-revolutionary rise to power of groups, classified as Islamist. Despite attempts to explain the success of Islamists in post-revolutionary elections and to predict the political future of Arab countries ruled by them, no one is asking who these Islamists coming to power really are. This Master thesis aims to cover this gap in the research in two ways. Firstly, it explores the meaning of Islamism, while trying to differentiate it from other more or less related ideologies, and other terms which are often associated with Islamism. Even though there are no universally accepted definitions of these terms, clarification of what they are used to describe is essential for comprehension of the broader topic. Secondly, the study focuses on research concerning the transformations of what is labelled as Islamism in the context of the Arab Spring revolutions and the post-revolutionary turmoil. As also the moderation theory suggests, ideologies, and this is also the case of Islamism, are not just a static concept. Despite the absence of attention paid to possible transformations of Islamism, this thesis demonstrates that the revolutions of the Arab Spring had an impact on the Islamist ideology. As such, it suggests that more focus should be devoted to further research of the essence of the current ideology of Islamism rather than just focusing on the political successes of its adherents.
