Parenting of children under 8 years in families with limited access to digital technologies

Abstract:

Tato explorativní kvalitativní práce se zabývá výchovou dětí od 6 do 8 let v rodinách, kde rodiče úmyslně omezují dětem přístup k novým digitálním technologiím. Cílem je zjistit, co charakterizuje takovou výchovu, z čeho takové výchovné postoje mohou vycházet a jaké jsou výchovné cíle těchto rodičů. Rozhovory s 10 rodiči z České republiky byly zpracovány tematickou analýzou. Výsledkem je analytický model výchovy s omezeným přístupem k digitálním technologiím. Pro rodiče s tímto postojem je důležitý optimální rozvoj dítěte "přirozenou" cestou a rodinné a přátelské vztahy. Digitální technologie podle rodičů tyto hodnoty ohrožují a děti technologie zatím nepotřebují. Svůj postoj k používání technologií dětmi staví rodiče na zkušenostech vlastních i od druhých lidí. Vnímají tlak od vrstevníků dětí k tomu, aby jejich děti taky měly digitální technologie. Zároveň se však přátelí spíše s rodinami, které vychovávají podobně, a tedy dětem také omezují přístup k technologiím. U dětí rodiče podporují jiné aktivity než trávení času u technologií. Přístup dětí k technologiím řeší operativně, nemají plán, jak budou dětem technologie zpřístupňovat.

Abstract:

This exploratory qualitative thesis deals with parenting six- to eight-year children in families where parents purposely limit children’s access to digital technologies. The goal of this bachelor thesis is to find out what characterizes such upbringing, parenting attitudes and parenting aims. There are 10 interviews with parents from the Czech Republic that were processed by thematic analysis. As the result there is an analytical model of parenting with limited access to digital technologies. Optimal development of children by “natural” way and also familial and friendly relationships are important for parents with this attitude. In their point of view digital technologies may endanger these values and young children do not need technologies. Parents build their attitudes towards the usage of technologies by children on their own experience and experience of other people. They perceive social pressure from children’s peers to have digital technologies just like them. Parents consort with families with similar way of parenting – who also limit access of their children to digital technologies. Parents rather encourage their children to do different activities than to spend time on technologies. They solve access of children to technologies operatively, they do not have a plan of making technologies accessible to children.
