Perception and coping with the burden associated with type 1 diabetes in the period of emerging adulthood

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou zátěže spojené s onemocněním diabetes mellitus 1. typu a jejím vnímáním a zvládáním u jedinců v období vynořující se dospělosti. Hlavním cílem práce bylo získat hlubší vhled do této problematiky a porozumět individuální zkušenosti jedinců. Výzkum vychází z kvalitativního přístupu. Data byla získána prostřednictvím pěti polostrukturovaných rozhovorů, které byly následně analyzovány metodou interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy. Výsledná analýza identifikovala témata, která reflektují výzvy, s nimiž se jedinci v souvislosti s diabetem v tomto období potýkají. Zejména se jednalo o nepředvídatelnost a prioritu zdravotního stavu před ostatními aspekty života. Dále byla identifikována témata týkající se přístupu jedince k onemocnění a jejich potřeb v tomto vývojovém období. Mezi faktory podporující zvládání zátěže spojené s diabetem byla identifikována možnost sdílení zkušeností, sociální sítě, komunita a nové technologie, které ovšem mohou přinášet také komplikace. Naopak, faktory, které ztěžují zvládání diabetu, zahrnují nepochopení a bagatelizaci ze strany okolí a nevhodný přístup zdravotnického personálu. Všechna takto témata jsou spolu navzájem provázána a vytvářejí tak komplexní popis zkušenosti jedinců v období vynořující se dospělosti s problematikou vnímání a zvládání zátěže spojené s celoživotním onemocněním.

Abstract:

This master's thesis addresses the issue of burden associated with type 1 diabetes mellitus and its perception and management among individuals in the period of emerging adulthood. The main aim of the thesis was to gain deeper insight into this issue and understand individuals' experiences. The research is based on a qualitative approach. Data were obtained through five semi-structured interviews, which were subsequently analysed using the method of interpretative phenomenological analysis. The resulting analysis identified themes reflecting the challenges that individuals must face in relation to diabetes during this period. Specifically, these included unpredictability and prioritization of health status over other aspects of life. Furthermore, themes concerning individuals' approach to the disease and their needs during this developmental period were identified. Factors supporting the management of diabetes-related burden included the opportunity to share experiences, social networks, community, and new technologies, which may also bring complications. Conversely, factors that make diabetes management more difficult include misunderstanding and trivialization by others and inappropriate medical staff approach. All these themes are interconnected and thus create a comprehensive description of individuals' experiences in the emerging adulthood period with the issue of perception and management of burden associated with lifelong illness.
