Independentist and Autonomist Movements in French Polynesia

Abstract:

V této práci se věnuji tématu autonomie a nezávislosti Francouzské Polynésie, důvodu vzniku těchto tendencí a možnému budoucímu vývoji. Po stručném seznámení s tématem následuje kapitola věnovaná historii Polynésie od prvních kolonizátorů a vztahy mezi Francií a Polynésií. Pokouším se najít změny tohoto vztahu v průběhu francouzské přítomnosti a situace, které tento vztah ovlivnily. V další části se zabývám politickým vývojem Polynésie. Podrobněji sleduji vývoj statusu, roli různých politických stran a osob a aktuální politickou situaci. Co se jí týče, snažím se najít hlavní mezníky z nedávné historie a současnosti, které měly a mají vliv na aktuální situaci a tím i na budoucí vývoj Polynésie. Cílem mé práce je přiblížit čtenáři historický a politický vývoj Polynésie a pokusit se zhodnotit, zda by Polynésie mohla dosáhnout samostatnosti.

Abstract:

In this thesis I emphasize the topic of autonomy and independency of the French Polynesia, origination of these tendencies and possible future development. The brief introduction of the topic is followed by a chapter which has been devoted to French Polynesia history, dating back to the first colonizers, and mutual relationships between France and Polynesia. I am trying to find these changes occuring during the french presence and situations which have had impact on the relation. In the other part I deal with a political development of Polynesia. In more detail I follow the status development, the role of various political parties and persons,as well as the recent political situation. In terms of it I make efforts to find the major turning points in recent history and present, which have influenced the current situation and the future development of Polynesia. The aim of my thesis is to get the reader closer to historical and political development of Polynesia and to attempt to evaluate, whether Polynesia could become independent.
