Usage of facebook and twitter in german lessons and its possible consequences

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the possibilities of using facebook and twitter in teaching German as a foreign language and its possible impacts. Modern technology and social networks (facebook and twitter including) are a solid part of most young people's lives. They spend a lot of time online, chating, writing posts, share everything and collecting "likes" or "followers". Social networks thanks to their widespread among young people, have great potential which can be effectively used in foreign language teaching. The aim of this work is to find out if the author's hypothesis that students consider using facebook or twitter in teaching German as a foreign language as playful, interesting, colorful, creative and generally useful, that it will expand their vocabulary and appreciate the authentic German language. The research was performed during German lessons at Pilsen high school, Mikulášské náměstí. First of all students described their relationship to facebook or twitter through a questionnaire. Then they participated in activities with facebook or twitter, which were prepared by the author of this diploma thesis. Finally these activities were evaluated using another questionnaire. This work deals firstly with the concept of medium, media classification and their role in nowadays society. Social networks are also described analogicaly, and their development is also explained. The next topic is a closer introduction of facebook and twitter as well as the possibilities of their use in teaching. The practical part describes in detail the research (objectives, process, questionnaires). Special attention is paid to specific activities with facebook and twitter, which are explained in detail. The practical part of the thesis also offers clear results of the whole research.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá možnostmi využití facebooku a twitteru ve výuce němčiny jako cizího jazyka a jeho možnými dopady. Moderní technologie a sociální sítě (včetně facebooku a twitteru) jsou pevnou součástí životů většiny mladých lidí. Ti tráví mnoho času online, chatují, píší příspěvky, vše se tzv. sdílí, jsou sbírány "lajky" nebo "followeři". Sociální sítě disponují díky svému širokému rozšíření mezi mladými velkým potenciálem, jenž může být efektivně využit ve výuce cizích jazyků. Cílem této práce je zjistit, zda se potvrdila hypotéza autorky, že žáci považují využití facebooku resp. twitteru ve výuce němčiny jako cizího jazyka za hravé, zajímavé, pestré, kreativní a obecně užitečné, že si jeho prostřednictvím rozšíří slovní zásobu a že ocení autentický německý jazyk. Výzkum byl proveden během výuky němčiny na Gymnáziu, Plzeň, Mikulášské náměstí. Žáci nejdříve prostřednitcvím dotazníku popsali svůj vztah k facebooku resp. twitteru. Poté se zúčastnili aktivit s facebookem resp. twitterem, jež byly připraveny autorkou práce. Nakonec byly tyto aktivity vyhodnoceny pomocí dalšího dotazníku. Tato práce se věnuje nejdříve pojmu médium, klasifikaci médií a jejich roli v současné společnosti. Dále jsou analogicky popsány také sociální sítě, přičemž je vysvětlen rovněž jejich vývoj. Následuje bližší představení facebooku a twitteru stejně jako možnosti jejich užití ve výuce. V praktické části práce je detailně popsán provedený výzkum (cíle, průběh, dotazníky). Zvláštní pozornost je věnována konkrétním aktivitám s facebookem a twitterem, jež jsou zde podrobně vysvětleny. Praktická část práce dále nabízí přehledné výsledky výzkumu.
