The scope of use of a mother tongue in teaching English as a second language in primary school education

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor's thesis was, based on the observation of primary school English teachers, to find out whether or not (and if so, to what extent) they use the students' mother tongue for teaching English as a foreign language. The theoretical part describes the different language acquisition theories and their views on language input. The language teaching methodologies connected to these theories are also explored and explained. The thesis is focused primarily on young learners in the primary education (i.e., grades 1-5) and, therefore, children's development and language development are explained. Most importantly, the advantages and disadvantages of using mother tongue in the foreign language classroom are stated. In the research, the theoretical ideas were observed in primary school classrooms by direct observation and interviewing the teachers. The teachers' use of mother tongue and target language were found out through a questionnaire and then observed during an English lesson in a primary school classroom. The teachers also had the option to share their personal opinions during an unstructured interview. In the end, the teachers' answers and the observations were compared.

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo na základě observací na základních školách zjistit, do jaké míry používají učitelé anglického jazyka ve svých hodinách anglický jazyk. Teoretická část popisuje teorie o osvojování jazyků a zaměřuje se na roli jazykového vstupu. Popisuje také metodologie, které na základě těchto teorií vznikly. Práce je zaměřena na třídy prvního stupně základních škol, je tedy zmíněn i dětský vývoj. Práce také uvádí výčet výhod a nevýhod používání mateřského jazyka ve výuce cizího jazyka. Ve výzkumné části byly provedeny observace ve třídách a následně provedeny rozhovory s učiteli. Pomocí dotazníku byly zjištěny postoje učitelů, které byly následně porovnávány s výsledky observací. Učitelé také měli možnost podělit se o své názory během nestrukturovaných rozhovorů.
