The Online Art Market and its Transformation

Abstract:

Tématem diplomové práce je analýza současné proměny trhu s uměním, který přesouvá své těžiště na nové digitální platformy. V teoretické části nejprve vymezuje tradiční trh s uměním a jeho specifika. Pozornost je přitom zaměřena především na sekundární trh, kde zastávají významnou roli aukční domy. Následně je přiblížen historický vývoj on-line trhu s uměním s důrazem na proměnu jednotlivých institucí. Představeny jsou technologie a on-line platformy, které nově začínají využívat aukční domy, galerie a veletrhy k prodeji a prezentaci uměleckých děl. Důraz je přitom primárně kladen na on-line aukce. V následující praktické části je nejprve na základě dostupných dat analyzován současný stav on-line trhu s uměním, jenž je zasazen do kontextu probíhající pandemie, která měla na tuto proměnu nezanedbatelný vliv. V závěrečné části je následně metodou opakovaných prodejů podroben statistickému výzkumu vzorek 572 uměleckých děl prodaných v aukčním domě Sotheby’s mezi lety 1985-2022. Metodou opakovaných prodejů je na tomto vzorku děl porovnávána cena uměleckého díla v živé (potažmo hybridní) aukci s cenou stejného díla v on-line aukci. Cílem je určit, nakolik byl tento formát úspěšný z hlediska návratnosti investice, a současně porovnat, jak se lišily reálné výnosy dle jednotlivých charakteristik, jako jsou kategorie, rozměr díla, použitá technika či výše ceny prvního prodeje.

Abstract:

The thesis analyses the current transformation of the art market, which is shifting its focus to new digital platforms. In the theoretical part, it first defines the traditional art market and its specificities. The focus is mainly on the secondary market, where auction houses play an important role. Subsequently, the historical development of the online art market is outlined with an emphasis on the transformation of individual institutions. The technologies and online platforms that auction houses, galleries and art fairs are now beginning to use for the sale and presentation of works of art are presented. The focus here is primarily on online auctions. In the following practical section, the current state of the online art market is first analysed on the basis of available data, which is set in the context of the ongoing pandemic that has had a significant impact on this transformation. In the final part, a sample of 572 works of art sold at Sotheby's between 1985 and 2022 is subjected to the statistical research using the method of repeat sales. The aim is to determine how successful this format has been in terms of return on investment, and at the same time to compare how real returns have varied according to individual characteristics such as category, size of the work, technique used or the amount of the first sale price.
