Relation of Learning Strategies and Knowledge of English as a Foreign Language

Abstract:

Diplomová práce „Vztah strategií učení a znalosti a angličtiny jako cizího jazyka“ se zaměřuje na zjištění používání strategií učení se angličtině jako cizímu jazyku na Střední pedagogické škole v Kroměříži, a to na základě řečových dovedností a jazykových prostředků. Cílem práce je pomocí didaktického testu Key English Test (Cambridge) zjistit jazykové znalosti žáků v oblasti řečových dovedností. On-line Dotazník strategií učení se cizímu jazyku pro žáky středních škol (Vlčková, Přikrylová 2010) zjišťuje používání strategií v oblasti řečových dovedností a jazykových prostředků. Do vztahu jsou dávány skóre z testu a míra používání jednotlivých strategií učení. V teoretické části jsou presentována teoretická východiska výzkumu a v praktické části je popsána metodologie a výsledky výzkumu. Výsledky výzkumu nám ukazují, které strategie jsou žáky používány nejvíce, a které nejméně. Výsledky výzkumu také ukazují vztah mezi výsledky testu a mírou používání strategií učení. Na základě výzkumu jsou uvedeny návrhy pro rozvoj strategií učení ve výuce cizího jazyka.

Abstract:

The thesis “Relation of Learning Strategies and Knowledge of English as a Foreign Language“ aims to assess the perceived use of foreign language learning strategies of students from the Upper Secondary Pedagogical School in Kroměříž. Strategies are classified according to the four language skills. The aim of the thesis is to find out the students’ knowledge of English and its relation to strategy use, i.e. influence of strategy use on achievement. Key English Test is used in order to test students’ four language skills. The strategy inventory is used in order to detect students’ perception of their strategy use. The strategy inventory is available on-line (Vlčková, Přikrylová 2010). The tests results are analysed in context with the results of the strategy inventory. The theoretical part presents the theoretical background of the research and the practical part describes the research methodology and the outcomes of the research. The research outcomes show which strategies are used by the pupils the most and which strategies are used the least. Research outcomes also show the results of the test and their relation to strategy use. Based on the research outcomes there are some activities suggested which can be beneficial in order to develop strategy training in foreign language teaching.
