Primary prepositions in Czech as a second language: an analysis of students' mistakes

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl představit problematiku primárních prepozic, a to nejprve z pohledu jejich místa v jazykovém systému, tedy v teoriích, kdy přemýšlíme o prostoru v jazyce, a poté v úrovni percepce z pozice cizinců. Z toho vyplývá i struktura práce. První část je teoretická, kdežto ta druhá je praktická. Teoretická část je zaměřená na samotné primární prepozice, dále na teorie o myšlení a orientaci v jazyce. Následně je pozornost zaměřena již na cizince, v rámci čehož jsou představeny i úrovně jazyka dle SERR. Teoretickou část je uzavřena nástinem konceptů tří jazykových učebnic češtiny pro cizince. Na tomto místě bylo záměrem zjistit, jak tyto učebnice reflektují potřeby studentů pro dosažení jejich kýžené úrovně. Druhou částí je praktické testování, pro které byl vytvořen speciální dotazník. Testování se podrobili respondenti dvou národností s odlišnými mateřskými jazyky. Záměrem praktické části práce bylo otestovat, jak tito respondenti chybují. Chybovost byla poté analyzována a klasifikována. Zajímavé závěry přineslo též zkoumání vlivu mateřského jazyka respondentů.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to present the issue of the primary prepositions, first from the perspective of their place in the language system, so in theories where we think about space in language, and then in the level of perception from the position of foreigners. It implies the structure of the work. The first part is theoretical, whereas the second part is practical. The theoretical part is focused on the primary preposition itself, on theories about thinking and orientation in language. Subsequently, the focus is already on foreigners, within which the SERR language levels are presented. The theoretical section is concluded with an outline of concepts of three language textbooks of Czech for foreigners. At this point, the idea was to see how these textbooks reflected the needs of students to reach their desired level. The second part is practical testing, for which a special questionnaire has been created. Respondents from two nationalities with different mother tongues were tested. The idea behind this part of work was to test how these respondents erred. This error rate is then analyzed and classified. Examination of the influence of the respondents' mother tongue also came with interesting conclusions.
