Identification of the Roma children with their own culture in urban environement - illustrated on Brno

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce by ráda pronikla hlouběji do stále aktuálnější tematiky – identity minoritní skupiny. Ústředním tématem je identifikace romských dětí se svojí kulturou. Následkem dlouhé kohabitace Romů s okolními etniky se romská kultura (stejně jako romský jazyk a jeho dialekty) proměňovala a zčásti se adaptovala okolnímu prostředí. Zajímaly mne tedy otázky, s jakou kulturou se dnes identifikují mladí Romové žijící v Brně, jaký je jejich vztah/ přístup k tradičním romským hodnotám, kulturním vzorcům a idejím. Práci jsem rozdělila do dvou hlavních částí: teoretické a praktické. Nejprve jsem charakterizovala romskou populaci žijící na území České republiky, poté jsem přesunula pozornost na historii osídlení Moravy a zejména Brna. Na což jsem navázala popisem tradiční romské – hmotné i duchovní – kultury, v níž jsem se zaměřila především na kulturní skutečnosti relevantní pro skupinu slovenských Romů (servika Roma). V praktické části práce jsem zmapovala současný stav Romů žijících v Brně spolu s charakteristikami jednotlivých lokalit a také možnostmi, jaké mohou romské děti využít pro trávení volného času. Podstata této práce však spočívá v samotném terénním výzkumu uskutečněném během jara a podzimu 2010 v Brně, avšak vycházejícího z dlouhodobého pozorování. Kvalitativního výzkumu se zúčastnilo 12 dětí ve věku 6-12 let.

Abstract:

The purpose of the submitted diploma paper is to thoroughly research into the increasingly topical subject, i. e. the identity of minority group. The central theme is concerned with identification of the Romani children with their culture. As a result of a long-term cohabitation with surrounding ethnic groups, the Romani culture (as well as the language and its dialects) has changed and, at least partly, it has adjusted itself to the surroundings. Thus, I concerned myself with questions as follows: What culture do the young Romanies living in Brno identify themselves with? What is their relationship/attitude to traditional Romani values, cultural patterns and ideas? I divided my thesis into two parts – theoretical and practical one. First, I characterized the Romani population living in the Czech Republic. Second, I focused on the history of colonization of Moravia, primarily on settling the Brno area. Then, I followed with the description of traditional Romani culture (both material and spiritual), where I focused on cultural facts pertaining to the group of Slovak Romanies (servika Roma). In the practical part of the thesis, I documented the current situation of the Romanies living in Brno along with characteristics of particular localities and of possibilities offered to the Roma children for spending their leisure time. However, the basis of my paper consists in the field research carried out in spring and autumn 2010 in Brno, yet resulting from a long-term observation. In the qualitative research, 12 children between the age of 6 and 12 took part.
