Marriage, or a top-pocket relationship? Current relationship trends in popular psychological handbooks

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je za pomoci kvalitativní obsahové analýzy čtyř populárně psychologických příruček pro partnerské vztahy zodpovědět výzkumnou otázku, zda a v jakých formách do české populárně psychologické scény pronikají současné trendy v partnerských vztazích. Pro analýzu byly vybrány čtyři knižní tituly na základě aktuálnosti, českého původu, psychologického nebo psychiatrického vzdělání autorů a autorky a jejich poradenské praxe v oboru a konečně na základě velikosti nákladu publikací. Na základě teoretické části, která pojednává především o proměně tradičních a moderních hodnot společnosti v hodnoty postmoderní v průběhu 20. století a o propojení této změny s oblastí intimních vztahů, se pak analýza zaměřuje především na vnímání manželství a alternativních forem intimních vztahů, jako jsou například singles, kohabitace, vztahy na dálku, kulturně a nábožensky smíšené vztahy, kapesní vztahy, čisté vztahy apod., vybranými psychology a psycholožkou. Text se také zaměřuje na doporučované rozdělení genderových rolí a zodpovědnosti za určité práce v soukromé sféře a význam sexuality v partnerství podle autorů a autorky publikací. Z analýzy vyplynulo, že psychologové a psycholožka jasně preferují manželství nad ostatními formami intimních vztahů. K alternativním formám intimních vztahů se buď vůbec nevyjadřují, nebo je nepovažují za plnohodnotné životní styly, ale pouze za dočasné náhrady.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to answer does current trends in intimate relationships permeate into the Czech popular psychological scene and, if so, how, through the use of content analysis of four popular psychological handbooks about relationships. For the analysis, four books were chosen based on their recency, Czech originality, the psychological or psychitrical education of the authors and their consulting practice in this field, and the number of copies published. The teoretical part of this thesis deals mainly with the transformation of traditional and modern societal values during the 20th century and the impact of this change within the field of relationships. Pursuant to this, the analysis focuses on certain psychologists perceptions of marriage and alternative forms of relationships, such as single life, cohabitation, long distance relationships, culturally and religiously mixed couples, top-pocket relationships, and clean relationships. The text focuses on the gender roles (such as the division of responsibility in the private sphere) recommended by the publications‘ authors, and also the importance they place on sexuality within relationships. Results from the analysis show that psychologists clearly prefer marriage over other forms of relationships. Psychologists usually either do not comment on alternative forms of relationships or do not consider them to be lasting lifestyles, only a temporary phase.
